  • EM0480 - How long to store beans in the hopper?

    Hi all,

Ive recently purchased a 6910 machine and the EM4080 grinder and this is my first home set-up so am on a steep learning curve. Ive found all of the info on this site great in terms of getting me up to speed on correct technique and have even managed to get a half decent coffee or two so far!
I understand from the info in these forums that this grinder performs best with the hopper half full. (By the way, Ive had the problem with the calibration being way out and had to add a washer - thanks to the forums!)
I also know that its best to store the beans away from light and in an airtight container.
My question is; should I be emptying the beans from the hopper at the end of each grind back into the airtight container for storage or is it ok to leave the hopper half full and keep topping it up to this level. i.e. leaving beans in it all the time?
I realise that either way there are beans left in the grind chamber. Im just wondering how important it is to keep them in optimum storage vs. the convenience of having the hopper ready to go and of course wear and tear on the hopper.
On average Im making two shots per day.
    Any advice appreciated. Cheers

    Hi Chris,

Congrats on the purchase, you have a long fun road ahead.

Personally, for myself, I will leave beans in the hopper if I know that Im going to consume them within 24 hours. If I know that wont happen, I take them back out and either keep them separate from the original bag, or if Im lazy, throw them back in with the rest. I try to avoid putting them back in as opening and closing the bag often is not good.

whatever I do however, I always clear the burrs and chute of any left over grinds as I dont want that ending up in the next drink.

Remember that oxygen is an enemy of the beans, so you are better to just put in the beans you will be using for that round of coffee. The rest should be stored in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

I weigh out the amount of beans I need for each shot as I have a set of scales on the kitchen bench. I know others use a scoop. Find the best method to put in the amount you are going to use for each coffee you make and stick to it. This will help in your dosing as well.

      Good luck with it all.

        Hi Nelo,

This may not neccessarily be the best way to go as you risk popcorning in your grinder- leading to inconsistency..You need bean mass to help achieve consistent grind size.

Better to learn how to dose correctly and consistently

Hi, not wanting to get my own post off topic but could you explain a little more what this means? Thanks

The em04080 Also has the problem that it tends to hold on to a lot of the grinds. Ive measured up to 7 grams coming out after Ive packed up and am clearing the grinder. Measuring out the correct amount and throwing it in wont work.

"Popcorning" is beans bouncing against the burrs and popping back up into the hopper until eventually catching in the burrs and being ground.
With the added weight of beans above them, the once pressed against the burrs should grind evenly.

              I disagree.
If you clear the burrs and chute as soon as you finish grinding you can get most if not all of what you put in.
The chute clearing brush supplied by Sunbeam didnt quite do the trick so I cut down the handle on an artists brush to make it pocket sized for my convenience.
That and some "click-clack lid" type action, pumped and swept all the grounds out.
              Only took a few seconds.

I fill the hopper up and when it empty I fill it up again, and when its empty I fill it up agian, sometimes I get an interesting tasteing coffee at the end of 250 gram batch. Couldnt be bothered emptying measureing etc. Got better things to do..........I wonder if I could make some good chum for fishing in my grinder.........coffee might suffer better not.

Depends on the chum your using... Pelleted dog food or What...

Actually, think of the outcome of a caffeine hit on the fish ??? Could bring them on the bite...

I just punch holes in some sloppy dog food tins and toss over or even toss out into a gutter on the beach... It is interesting when rangers stop you in a National Park and you try to explain why you have a carton of dog food ... Their always looking and checking for the dog :-)

                      Re EM0480 & associated problems

I had a EM0480 for 10.5 months and worked quite well until grinding very coarse which could not be fixed by selecting finest setting or by adding washers to unit. Replacement unit took 4.5 weeks to arrive  from Sunbeam under warranty and  then grind on finest setting was worse(still much to coarse) than on unit sent for replacement.
So now for replacement number two - hopefully in less than time than before and ok ???
What I am asking is that I now have to get my beans ground by the coffee supplier and as I only use about enough for 2 cups per day it is almost impossible to grind a small quantity of beans - both expense wise and for pratical purposes and keep coffee fresh. I keep ground beans in airtight jar is all  I can think of.

Hope I get a reply this time as last time about another query about this grinder didnt get a response. Maybe this time lucky.

Gussy--Once the beans are ground they only stay fresh for a couple of minutes, no matter how you store them they will be stale. Hopefully your replacement grinder will arrive asap.

I accidentally proved this yesterday when my B-I-L called as Id just finished grinding.
By the time he got off the phone a few minutes later and I filled, tamped and locked in the group handle, the shot ran too fast.
Id managed to pour one shot just before he rang so I know how the second shot should have behaved.

This is my first post so be gentle. I have a freezer bag which I have filled with some stale beans that I put on top of the fresh beans I want to grind in my EM0480. You could use rice etc. as an alternative. My wife takes credit for this solution...God bless her, she comes up with all the great solutions to various problems I seem to constantly find myself in

She probably read it here, as it has already been suggested using rice.
