  • Coffee Bean Silos

I was thinking of getting some Silos for my roasted beans, maybe that would hold around 3-4kg. But two things concern me, 1. Air tight (It seems that the commerical ones such as the picture attached they are not airtight the cylinder ones are clear so lets a lot of light in. and 2. Price They are some expensive. I thought I could maybe make a few myself. Has anyone attempted this and made them airtight for bean preservation.

Small and cheap is a wall mounted dispenser

I have some ideas for a DIY project but I need to know how much you need to store in KG & volume in beans

I had seen those on the net before, I guess I was looking at anywhere between 2 and 4 kg of beans. (roasted of course). The cylinder ones look fairly easy to replicate, a cylinder with a fancy lid. I was think of a spaghetti tube, with a funnel and a ball valve fitted to the bottom.

What did you have in mind KK?

Seen the price of stainless ball valves?

I dont know that Ive seen any of these dispensers that I really like, I would be tempted on using them as a static display and then providing beans (already) in valve bags after the customer selected them from the display.

Here, here! Might as well use spaghetti jars imho. The silos do make nice displays for green beans.

what about at the $2 shops?
they often have these sort of things.
not going to be sealed well at the $2 shop but.......

what about some tall thin vases (for display), the no tops issue but so dust and stuff will get in? cheap ones at $2 shops as well...

medical glass bottles? they will have good lids

IMO i would only buy coffee from these in a place i no has very high turnover.........

You can get empty 10 or 20 lt water bottles (you know the ones you turn upside down) fit a gate & a filler top
To reduce the amount of stored beans you can fit a separator

Why not spend the money on a good quality sealer and valve bags....

                  Why?
Will it be for storage until sale or just for personal use?
Do they need to be on display?

I have a sealer and valve bags but would like to display the goods and have easier access for filling the bags and make it look rather nice.

                      Re: Coffee Bean Silos

You could display any bean but it would depend on turnover on how long the beans would be on display in a less than optimal environment.
