  • Corretto Heat Gun position and nozzle attachments

Hi CSers Im new to the world of the corretto roaster. I had a look around the forums but couldnt really find the answer so I thought I would start a new topic. So I have 2 main questions as follows:

    1) What is or where would be an ideal starting position for the tip of the heat gun (HG) in relation to the bread makers (BM) removable basket eg. where the beans go with the mixer part. I know it may vary from bean to bean and personel preferences with the roast you are doing. So Im just looking for a good starting pint.

    2) Has anyone tried different nozzel attachments in the Corretto ie. the spaded/flattened attachment or the more directed attachment. I have noticed with a spaded attachment that the heat isnt as intense at the same distance from the HG. So I would just like to know if anyone has used different nozzels with there setup

Re: Corretto Heat Gun position and nozzel attachments

Hi at535, I usually start off my roasts with the hg nozzle inside the bucket just above the paddle and to one side of the bucket opposite my temp probe.
I thought about the nozzle attachments but thought that it might concentrate the heat in one area instead of dispersing it evenly.
As the beans heat up I gradually move the hg higher to ease off the heat.
Usually reach first crack around 11-13mins and second 5-6 mins after that.
    Enjoy your roasting.................gm

Re: Corretto Heat Gun position and nozzel attachments

I have had good results using a wide mouth nozzle, however with more and more reading here I am thinking I need to switch to no nozzle for best results (at least in the majority of opinions I have come across, which may be a skewed result!).

I begin with the tip of the nozzle a couple of centimetres below the rim of the bowl, and use a digital thermometer (modded in as seen everywhere on this site) to guide my height adjustments to attempt to follow a temperature profile I am aiming for.

Do you have a digital thermometer set up? I find this vital to guide height adjustments.

      Travis.

        Well,

From my own perspective, it really depends on the type of BM have and the Heatgun you use. With the potential for almost infinite variation of all the possibilities out there, knowing this might help to make some helpful suggestions....

          What Mal said.

For example with my variable temp Ryobi the height of the gun is less of a factor.

But using an Aldi HG on Hi only, I start a few cm above the pan and move down as I want to raise the temp and then move the gun back up to reduce the temp rise.

Better to start high and move closer using your temp probe as a guide.
You get the hang of it rather quickly.

Recently I tried using the curve bladed attachment I saw someone else with an Aldi gun was using.

It deflects the heat so that the gun can be aimed in at an angle instead of straight down.
Ive always worried that the hot air coming straight back up reduces the life of the gun.
The difference is that Im no longer concentrating the hot air into the pan corner as far from the temp probe as possible. The jury is still out on whether theres been any significant change to the readings.
It does seem to make it harder to heat the beans at the speed Ive been used to and may be at the limit of the guns capacity to roast to my existing profiles.

Re: Corretto Heat Gun position and nozzel attachments

I dont use any nozzle attachment on my Ryobi HG.
I have been starting my roasts in the heat of a Brisbane summer with the nozzle of the HG about 50mm above the top of the BM body. The top of the bread coffee bin is a bit lower than the top of the BM with my Breville.
The HG is then lowered and raised to keep the temp to the profile I want to achieve. Starting height in cooler weather is usually around 20-25mm above top of BM body.
My HG is tilted a bit with the axis about 20deg off vertical and it is aimed across the diagonal of the (square) bread  coffee bin with the nozzle just inside the bin. This seems to keep the HG out of most of the heat exhausting from the bin.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have found the people on this forum are every bit more than helpful and to pass on knowlage they have.

              Firstly:

Yes I do have a DMM with temp read out. I also downloaded some logging software (the manual input one in excel) which I think looks like a great little tool.

I have a Modded Ronson BM which I think is the same as the Palsonic if you know that model. I just took out the heating element and removed all circuit boards from with in. Connected motor direct to power and placed 2 switches on top. Also I got a Ozito HG which I got new from Bunnings for like $38. I thought with a 3 year warranty why not give it a go.

So once again thanks for the advice and I will use every bit I can for my first roast.

Re: Corretto Heat Gun position and nozzel attachments

Just to throw another opinion out there...

Since our Ryobi HG died (2-setting version), and we upgraded to the variable heat version, we tried something different (after seeing it done by CSer Rayzurhed). The logic goes: rather than having the HG 10-15cm away from the bean mass on a setting of 500C, why not having it on a setting of 350C but nestled into the bean mass itself?

We tried this (with the "spreader" nozzle attachment, FYI, but mainly because it extends the length of the nozzle in total) and have had great results. Zero tipping (barring mistakes), and zero scorching (which I kind of expected the first couple of roasts, just because the beans touch metal...). In terms of delivering the minimum possible heat to the beans in order to reach appropriate FC and SC times, this method is very adaptable!

It does, however, require a variable-type HG rather than the 2-setting type that it seems you have, at535...

Hope that might help someone, tho!
                Cheers
                Stuart.

Should I go against my own advice and change more than one thing at a time?

I could try the HG thing and then christen my new cooler bucket with the resulting roast.

Just make sure you tether the bean cooler so that it does take off down the street with your beans on board : ;D ;D ;D ;D
