:-[ Very embarassed, but DO NOT ROAST 300G of the Februrary Beanbay Ethiopian Gambella Sundried in the GENE.
I did it today and the chaff got quite a nice red glow happening, both at the exit vent and in the chaff collector
Which of course caused panic, as I didnt have anything handy to do a quick fire-safe dump, other than the lawn which would caused a bigger problem in keeping the dogs away. Managed to dump into the sieve about a minute after the "fire" started, no damage except for cremated beans, pride and a smoky bean hopper that a dose of Cafetto and a scrub fixed.
I am still learning the Gene, and after reading the instructions I tried a 200g roast of the Sidamo Koriate (also dry processed) and couldnt hear the cracks, so after consultation with another Gene owner, who always roasts 300g, did that with no problems. However it is now apparent that the Gambella Sundried is a much more chaffy bean, so it didnt work in this instance. Two subsequent 250g roasts went well, stopped at very start of 2nd crack at about 16 min, looks like CS 9-10 and smells like coffee not charcol
I hope this experience helps other Gene owners aviod the same
It is not one to put on the "Must Do" list
