Re: 1st or 2nd crack
When I hear first crack I watch the clour of the beans closley. I rarely if ever go on to second crack, but have once or twice - I like the darker roast but the wife (bless her) prefers the lighter roast, so rarely do I venture into anything over CS 9.

Re: 1st or 2nd crack
I can usually hear the 2nd crack but there is almost alwaya a lot of smoke at that point, so maybe should be stopping earlier. Thanks for the adivce, will try it out and check out the cs colour chart/

Re: 1st or 2nd crack
I have always had difficulty hearing second crack (I am a little deaf if the wife can be believed). So I mainly roast to colour and texture. One indicator to second crack being close or happening is an increase in smoke coming from the beans. However this is not always accurate as some beans do not give off as much smoke as others.
Use the CS card (or any other colour guide that can be found on the internet) to check the stage your beans are at. If you like your roasts at CS9 then stop your roast when it gets to that colour.

Re: 1st or 2nd crack
Theres a difference between stopping before SC and stopping after FC.
How do you know how close you were to SC?

1st or 2nd crack
Hey all. I started with the popcorn popper and have moved onto breadmaker + heat gun. Been experimenting with 1st crack vs 2nd crack. Someone said that you should stop before 2nd crack but I have found that is seems to loight. Any suggestions on timing?Tags: None
