Re: Our first roast...
Thanks guys!
The Gambella was delicious! Really smooth and mild, cant recall a berry taste but we drank it a little young (desperate
)
That black Uganda was putrid. Tasted like particularly bitter ear wax according to Simon. We had another go at it today and it came out very nice. Weve been drinking the Malawi with milk and its very nice, quite fruity.
Still learning a lot, is it a problem when SC starts immediatly after FC stops?

Re: Our first roast...
Weclome to the fun of home roasting Luwaks!
The first tip I can offer is keep plenty of notes. Notes on how your roasted, notes on when you tried it, notes on what it tasted like. The more you write down the better you understand the variables that make every bean and roast different in the cup. Your own tastes will also chop and change over time as you better understand what it is that you like and dislike in a coffee.
Your first Gambella roast should be full of berry type flavours. Its a dry processed bean so as mentioned above, the multi colours is fine.
The second roast looks too dark from the pictures but I have a couple of commercial customers that request roasts that dark and love it that way.
That is the prefect attitude!Originally posted by 58545D5D5E5E574E484F3B0 link=1248952210/3#3 date=1249034669Ahh well, well see if its drinkable, and if not its all experience
Having fun on this journey to amazing coffee is really important.
We all look forward to seeing progress pictures of his handywork, nothing CSrs love more than a whacky invention for roasting coffee.Originally posted by 58545D5D5E5E574E484F3B0 link=1248952210/3#3 date=1249034669A very handy metal works dude we know has offered to build us a bbq roasting set up so its going to be on for young and old soon

Nothing wrong with burning a roast in the early stages of learning the craft. Its the only way to learn how far is too far.

so much fun! A very handy metal works dude we know has offered to build us a bbq roasting set up so its going to be on for young and old soon!
Yes, I wondered about that sheen on the Uganda, thought it might be a bit dodgy. Ahh well, well see if its drinkable, and if not its all experience.
phrostyboi - we did Malawi today and it was a little mixed too.
This is a tad embarressing but both of us have been having coffee related dream [smiley=shocked.gif]s lately [smiley=shocked.gif]

Re: Our first roast...
Thanks for your notes. (And, isnt it fun... and permanent.)
The Ethiopian Gambella is a multi-colour roast. I aim for an average of CS10 across the roast (usually CS9-11), pulled just before RSC.
All that shiny oil on the second roast indicates that its perhaps a bit dark, however you may prefer its flavour.
Your first roast will probably peak between 5-10 days, and will contain more of the aromatics as well as some body and depth.
I liked your observation about the cast iron pan vs wok heat disperson.

Re: Our first roast...
Yet another addict from the starter pack
Ive had mine for a couple of days and already roasted up a couple of batches from it, try your beans starting at 24 - 48 hours daily and work out what works well for you, ive foudn that one of mine is even nice after 24 hours rest, needs more but nice
one of my roasts was an ethiopian as well, I found the colour on the beans to be a bit inconsistent on that as well as the malawi as well, think its a trait of home roasting
I found my ethiopian to take longer getting to rolling FC than others ive tried (4.5 mins compared to about 3.5), I havnt roasted into SC yet as I prefer lighter roasts

Our first roast...
Were addicted! Our starter pack arrived this morning and here are the results.
we used Dis bbq wok tips. Unfortunatly our 3 year old and 1 year old were quite distracting, what with trying to absail down the treehouse and all [smiley=rolleyes.gif], and then the air-con man arrived at the crucial moment so... well here it is anyway...
we got confused with the first batch about FC thinking we had reached it when it wasnt yet rollling. We actually got there about 9 min and second ??????? got a bit lost...and the gas stopped and Heather is a bit "challenged" with the BBQ operations and this was when the knock on the door happened which meant Simon wasnt there to make the nice blue flame come back.
Second batch was better, did it in a cast iron pot rather than the wok which produced a better heat base and I was more in-tune with what was going on. FC was about the same and SC was about 3 mins later (i think).

a bit uneven?
and 2nd attempt

even but very dark. Too dark?
same roast, but it looks noice close up (this is not a b/w photo)

Thanks for indulging us!
