    Re: Newbie Help with iRoast!

Not sure I can be much assistance, but reading back through some of the i-roast threads, the loud noise seems to be a problem, along with profiles which offer little diversity.

Obviously trusting the machine to do its job is preferable --otherwise youve paid a lot of money for a glorified popper.

But until the fault is rectified, can you not resort to other indicators:-

First crack is heralded by a distinctive burning coffee aroma.

The darkness of beans should be a tell-tale sign of where theyre at.

Use a timer to determine how long it takes for them to get to that stage, then count how long before they turn to charcoal so you know not to go that far next time

    Re: Newbie Help!

Thank you Mal for the advice.
I did as you suggested and increased the batch size. They came out as charcoaland no cracking heard.
The link you sent me did help. I am using a spring to tighten up the chaff-collector and increasing air-flow.
What I am trying now is (since I have given in to the reality that this machine will forever run hot) is using lower tempeture and shorter roasting time. I am down to:
    340F - 3 (upsteam temp 309F)
    380F - 3 (upsteam 330F)
    400F - 3 (upsteam 376F)

And I did hear one crack with 2:00 min left on the roast.

I am so disappointed with this maching but not ready to five up!
    Thanks,
    Tacoma

    Hi Tacoma,

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

I dont own or have ever used an iRoast, and no doubt one of our many member/owners will offer up some first hand advice. Just from what you describe though, it sounds like the air-flow was being restricted by the faulty chaff-collector before, and now that you have repaired it the air-flow has increased to what it should have been all along. Heres some really good info on iRoast roasters here that might be of help to you...... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1124115705

Maybe you just need to adjust the bean batch size up a bit to allow the roast chamber temperature to increase? Since Im unaware of the technical specs of an iRoast Ill leave this up to you and other owners to comment on. Hope the above thread helps you out though ;D,

    Cheers,
    Mal.

    Newbie Help with iRoast!

I just bought an i-Roast (version 1?). My problem in roasting is that I am not getting any cracking sounds consistently. Maybe 1 out of 5-6 roasts will I get cracks. So I have been judging the roasts by color. I have used both the presets that come with the i-Roast as well some roasts times that I have seen posted at this site.
The beans that I have tried are Mandheling, Guatermala Coban-El Tirol and Harrar.Using an amount of ~150 grams.

One interesting aspect is that I did have a problem with a loose chaff collector lid and base which I corrected use Sweet Marias directions. Before the problem was fixed I WAS getting goods cracks!. Since I corrected the looseness the cracks semed to have disappeared!
Should I loosen things up again?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Working...
