Re: Monsooned Malabar in Gene Cafe

They sound like very long roasts and very low temps your using there. From memory the Malabar I had a couple of years ago had a very loud first crack. Try and keep your roasts under 20 minutes, My default setting on the gene is 225. If its a bean with lots of chaff thats blocking the temp sensor then I might turn it down a bit towards the end to extend the roast. My average roast would be about 17 minutes.

    Monsooned Malabar in Gene Cafe

    Hi folks,
I have just tried roasting some Monsooned Malabar using Serges (Go Barista) suggested profile and Dennis response ...here ... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1158109405
I have only done 20 or so roasts on the Gene, and have never had any trouble hearing both 1st and 2nd cracks.
With the MM, however, I did not hear a peep out of the beans on my first attempt, which was 200gm for 25 mins at 210C and a further 5 mins at 215C. The roast looks fantastic at about CS8 and very even.
My second attempt straight after was 200gm at 215C for 25 mins...again the roast is an even CS8, but AGAIN I heard nothing.
Can anyone shed any light on what could be happening here?? I can only assume not enough heat was used, but this would suggest Serges advice was incorrect...something I am sure is not the case...
    Thanks for any thoughts,
    buff
Working...
