  • Black & Decker first roast

    Hi All

I have jumped over to the brown (dark side), I think I said in one of my early posts that I would probably not be getting into that home roasting thing as I was happy to find a good brand and stick with it…..guess what? Yes after reading Andy’s article in Bean Scene on home roasting I ordered his starter pack and stopped into the local OP-SHOP and got a B&D popper. My first roast was more of a cremation and tasted a little on the burnt side; I did another batch today and does look much better. Does anyone else have any experience with times on the B&D, mine is ready in 4 minutes, this seems way too fast however they look ok. With this sort of time I really can’t distinguish between FC & SC or if I am even getting to SC, I do have lots of smoke so I guess I am where I need to be. The sort of flavour I am looking for is the “dark roast” from Danes coffee shop if anyone has ever tried that, so I would be happy if someone could let me know what would be the best Green to get that sort of flavour? (Andy any suggestions?)

Re: Black & Decker first roast

I own a B&D popper..purchased it along with a Tiffany which looks very much the same from a Salvation Army store second hand.

The 2 poppers replaced my Brevilly Crazy Popper after it expired on aprox 1 year of use.

I took the same approach as the Breville to begin with ... 1 1/pinch cups of green bean but neither the B&D or the Tiffany could handle that amount without a lot of agitation at the beginning. I found that just under 1 cup of green bean(with a chimney) was about right and most roasts finished in about 8 minutes. I never actually used a timer as i always went on sight sound and smell.

Thanks for your comments Luke G, I gues I am more of a tactile person too, I fend watching the timer destracts me and somehow makes me more nervous neer the end of the roast. Dis some more this afternoon and despite the B&D cutting out on the second batch I managed to roast 500g of green Uganda Busamaga AA, they roased in 4m 10sec which was about 1m into second crack.

I also changed the little desk fan to a much larger pedistool fan, I think that helped.

Is there a single orig been that is good for a very dark and earthy roast, or would this be achieved better with a blend?

            Cheers

For dark and earthy look to south American beans such as Guatemalan or Columbian. Steer clear of most African beans if you like them well into second crack as you will loose a lot of the unique fruity characteristics the Africans are famous for.
Try Roasting 2 different origins and seeing what you like best about the 2 and blend them by a % as per what you liked best between the two...then later down the track add a 3rd bean and so on.

I found some Papua New Guinea peaberry about 6 months ago that was fairly flexible and easy to keep moving in large batch sizes in the popper.

Thanks Luke G, I will work my way through the starter pack from Andy and think about getting some South American to see if thats my flavour.

I am sure as time goes by and as I roast more beens my preferences will change. I guess it is natural to contrast with your last batch. :P
