I suspect this is not the first to happen to a CSer, nor will it be the last...
I roast my beans in a corretto in mainly 2 different ways; my heatgun is a Aldi Taurus special with 2 fan and heat settings, the low setting has a slower fan and doesnt go up too high in temp(Im guessing 250C), the high setting is a higer fan speed and up to 550C. When I want a slower heat ramp up form the beginning I use the low setting and a wooden "cover" with a hole in it to insert the HG nozzle. When I use the high setting, no cover is used and the HG sits really high up above the beans.
Measured out a 250g batch of the Ethiopia Sidamo Guji and this one I found to benefit from a slow ramp up so, the cover goes on, and I ws rushing to set it up because I had to go to the crapper... Switched it on, went to the little boys room and approx minutes later when I came out, there was thick yellow smoke in my whole garage and the poitn of origin was the corretto... Fought my way thru the smoke and first thought it was a severe HG failure but realised I had the heat setting on high and cover on and HG quite deep in... Still connected to the laptop, I had a look at the roast (more like BURN) profile, FC at probably 1 minute, got to 550C and stayed there for a while....
