  • Things that go BOOOOOM!

I suspect this is not the first to happen to a CSer, nor will it be the last...
I roast my beans in a corretto in mainly 2 different ways; my heatgun is a Aldi Taurus special with 2 fan and heat settings, the low setting has a slower fan and doesnt go up too high in temp(Im guessing 250C), the high setting is a higer fan speed and up to 550C. When I want a slower heat ramp up form the beginning I use the low setting and a wooden "cover" with a hole in it to insert the HG nozzle. When I use the high setting, no cover is used and the HG sits really high up above the beans.
Measured out a 250g batch of the Ethiopia Sidamo Guji and this one I found to benefit from a slow ramp up so, the cover goes on, and I ws rushing to set it up because I had to go to the crapper... Switched it on, went to the little boys room and approx minutes later when I came out, there was thick yellow smoke in my whole garage and the poitn of origin was the corretto... Fought my way thru the smoke and first thought it was a severe HG failure but realised I had the heat setting on high and cover on and HG quite deep in... Still connected to the laptop, I had a look at the roast (more like BURN) profile, FC at probably 1 minute, got to 550C and stayed there for a while....

My roasting is now on hold for a while until I get myself another breadmaker, heatgun etc, or at least limited to small batches done on the IMEX.

Despite the loss of the BM, HG, beans etc, I consider myself pretty fortunate because:
          i. The petrol tank near the setup was untouched
ii. My laptop and DMM are untouched
iii. The neighbours werent around otherwise they might have called the fireys... would have been half funny to come out of the crapper and find a fire truck hosing down the corretto...

Yea... The Investigations may have reviled a lack of Smoke detectors and what some might consider an interesting practice?

Opps... In some places it could have also meant; fines for having them pay a visit

What you meant to say was youre hoping you arent the first one to do this.

Sheeze NTE, dont leave the roaster (any roaster) alone for a minute and certainly dont roast near a petrol tank!

As always, should you or any of your CS force be caught or killed, Andy will disavow any knowledge of your actions. Good luck, NTE. This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.

Leaving the roasting unattended - unfortunately, I dont think I have the diligence or the good sense to stop this practise in future; Ive done that heaps of times in the past before this mishap, and this time all it took was a moment of brain fade and flicked the switch the wrong way.... I suffer from adult ADHD (not diagnosed) ie. just cant sit still for more than half a minute unless Im asleep. Watching the a roast go I would have done in the early roasting days. Now its just monitoring it every couple of minutes to make sure the roast profile is as expected (or at least close to).

Petrol tank... didnt make the connection until I took that photo, noticed the red container in the background is the petrol tank for the mower...
Update - just bought a used bM from the bay of evils, new corretto project to commence soon. A colleague of mine suggested a overheat cutoff switch; dont know how Id incorporate one of that in. Chances are it will be the same setup as before EXCEPT Ill be using a variable temp HG from now on. No more cheap 2 speed HGs for me.
