Re: Roasting vs ST - Results after 2 rounds

    Hi ST,

dont give up, the bowl and wooden spoon works great I did my first 20 or so roasts that way and before getting a popper I did the odd one still with small batches of Robusta.

The Bowl I use is one that Safeway have in stock still I think with a rubberised bottom. Much deeper and more narrow at the top than your by thr looks of it. When you get your thermocouple sorted out yhat will help to control the temp rise. I found that the easiest way for me to do it was full temp on the heatgun and just control depth into the bowl to control the temp ramp.

    My origional thread here http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1219910198/0#0

I have a patent on the bean cooler but I have allowed free use for home users

Didnt get to try them today, so looks like they get to sit until Saturday or Sunday when I get back home.  The roast worked a darn-sight better than the one the day before, so fingers crossed the result is nice - at least by expecting something sub-par there is room for surprise

The ones that Andy sells? Yep, they are K type.
Most temperature readers (PID, multimeters, etc) will take a K type so if you are shopping else where it is safest to get the K type.
Thanks.  That was what I was hoping (and was assuming), but just wanted to make sure, since Ive already got a DMM with a thermocouple input.

Still trying to locate a breadmaker, and plan to get the thermocouples shortly to get a feel for temperature (anyone know if they are K-type?).

    Nice one ST.

looks pretty good and Im guessing youll be impressed. I like to leave the Peru CdSE for at least a week as I find it improves significantly at this point.

If you can wait that long....

    enjoy the ride,

    sd

Roasting vs ST - Results after 2 rounds

6 weeks in the making, but weve now taken the first steps at changing the colour of some coffee beans (specifically, the Peru Ceja de Selva Estate) from green to brown.

First roast yesterday was a dud - currently only using a mixing bowl and spoon, and the cooler weather + older heat-gun meant things went way too slow  >

Lessons duly noted, some old carpet was used for insulation around the outside of the bowl, with a makeshift lid over half of the top.  These additions were immediately noticeable with popping (what I assume to be first-crack) around ~12 minutes and one or two louder snaps somewhere around the 18-20 minute mark, where the roast was stopped and smoke beginning become noticeable, resulting in the after picture.

Expecting much better results than the first try, although still a little cautious as to what to expect when they hit the grinder tomorrow morning.  Still trying to locate a breadmaker, and plan to get the thermocouples shortly to get a feel for temperature (anyone know if they are K-type?).

Next few days Im busy, but hoping to go for round 3 on the weekend  8-)
Working...
