  • How big is your stash?

I decided to relocate my green coffee from bags in little piles all over the kitchen and dining room.

While I was at it, I thought I might do a quick audit of how much was there.

    53.5kg!!!!

Considering I go through about 1/2 a kilo per week, this is a lot.

Damn you Andy, too many good polls.

So CSers, how big is your stash?

Goatherder, hate to rain on your poll, but there is a similar thread here http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1118439720

      Ahhh, I dunno....

Doesnt hurt to refresh the numbers since last time ,

      Mal.

Oh yeah, I forgot :-[..... Ive now got about 65Kgs stashed around the house . Starting to feel a bit like a pack rat; Ive got beans stashed here, beans stashed there.... even in my wardrobe now :P. I think my lovely better half will be making a few subtle suggestions soon, will just have to construct/adapt a proper storage cupboard one of these days.... before I get told to ,

      Mal.

Re: How big is your stash?

        Im at 23.3kg right now.

I recently created a small excel spreadsheet to keep track of my green bean inventory.

Ill post a copy when I get home tonite. Someone might find it usefull as a template.

Everything was weighed and itemised and now whenever I roast, I weigh what I use and update the inventory accordingly. So I can tell at a glance, WHICH beans I have on hand and how much of each, without having to empty the bags onto the kitchen table.

It even has two graphs so I can track my total green bean weight and stock value over time.
(that part I did just out of interest, as I m new to this whole thing and want to keep SOME track of it all just for fun).

I expect the curves to trend UP over time :-)

Re: How big is your stash?

Link to my spreadsheet as mentioned above:

          http://users.tpg.com.au/adsli4ll/LEAVEUP/Green%20Bean%20Inventory%2029-03-06.xls

Includes amounts I got in starter pack and from Home Roasting Course pack.

A bit pedantic perhaps, but I like to feel in-control and reckon this is easier than rumaging thru the shelves of the linen cupboard.. er I mean.. Green Coffee Storage Area

Re: How big is your stash?

um, what happened to the 80-100kg mark?

Anyway, I *think* that Im in the top marker category anyway. Actually, scratch that, I know Im in the top category, I have only inventoried about 50% of my stash here in Sydney and that combined with the equal stash in Oberon already puts me over the 100kg (77.9kg Oberon, 39.3kg here).

Anyway, I too started to keep a spreadsheet (on pocket pc, to keep it mobile) so I knew when I was running short of blend ingredients at one location or the other, so I could readjust my geographic dispersion of beans. I havent quite gone to the extent of lochness with the value on hand (BTW, does that include your freight cost? I always factor that into my "real cost" equations when I actually have someone willing to reimburse me the cost of beans - and then I always use 80% recovery rate too) but I reckon the cost/value part is a great addition.....

Good God poundy, I am obviously a mouse among men here! That is one serious stash. I think that sort of quantity falls in to the category of futures trading ;D

My bean cupboard would be limited to about 10 kg (If I ever get that far) at most and I fear expanding any further than that would upset the domestic bliss :P

Holy Cow.... that thing is INTENSE :-) I thought mine was complicated with graphs and what-not. I would get lost for days using that one. Looks great for the pros who do coffee for a business though.

Its actually pretty easy to use. It looks complex but its fairly straight-forward in use, and you dont have to use all its features. Use any or all of them. While all the parts are linked together its all in the background and you dont have to worry about it. Each part will funtion independently.

Ive been using it for a year now to track my inventory and roasts and have found it to be an invaluable tool. I use it as a One Stop Shop for my coffee. I use it to record and track everything from tasting notes, to inventory, to roasts in addition to using it as the clock during roasts.

The program is most suited to those who have a computer handy when roasting so they can use it to track the roast in real time. If youre recording your roasting info by hand and then later transfering it into the database it can become a bit onerous. Used Live however I find it to be very easy to use and a wonderful tool to have.

**The database requires that Microsoft Access is already installed on the computer. Wont work without it unfortunately.

Re: How big is your stash?

when I started typing this, there were 8 people below 50kg, 5 above.  My number isnt that strange, is it.....

And to be honest, I started out thinking the same way you did, "Who needs more than a few kilos of beans?"

"Oh look, those plastic wheeled storage boxes with lids are on sale. Ill just grab one to put those couple of different bean types I have into"

"Oh look, a new month and a new bean on offer, havent tried any of those before. Better grab a bit"

"oh look, the wheelie plastic bins are on sale again. Lets grab 4 this time, the stash has grown and Im sure I can find other things to put in them"

"oh look, a new month, a new four bean types to try. Really liked last months beans, better make sure I buy 5kg of each this time around"

"oh look, ran out of space in the bins I had beans in, better find a cardboard box to put that other stuff in so I can use it for beans"

"oh look, the shelves in the garage are full of beans, better look away"

"oh look, some more beans on offer, well Ive got that many that another 5kg of those few wont matter will it"

Re: How big is your stash?

Stash size is only really relevant when put up against monthly consumption. I roast about 2kg a month and so my aim is to keep stocks fairly constant at about 25kg (years supply). Obviously green beans are still good for some time longer than a year so a larger stash wouldnt be ridiculous.
The idea is to set the cap low, resist exceeding it for as long as humanly possible and then set yourself a new, higher cap, justifying it by such things as mentioned by poundy above. Then you have so many beans that you have to find a means of roasting in larger batches. As such, your coffee consumption must increase. Where it ends? Who knows, perhaps thats the thrill of the journey?

                            Whats that?

You mean that there might be an end in sight? I started to think like that when I had about 20Kgs stashed away, now at 65Kgs and forever climbing .... I dont think there really is an end to this great pastime, you just get more deeply involved and find new ways to enjoy . Hmmm, its about 1:10 AM, probably got time for a quick shot before I hit the sack.... addicted you say? You bet ;D,

                            Mal.

                              This is a great discussion.

I havent started roasting yet (still building my roaster). I can see how this addictive this will become... sounds great to me!
