I dont keep much coffee on hand unfortunately. What I buy in each poll gets me by until the next poll, with little bits left for blending.

If Im not drinking the freshly roasted stuff, the older stuff builds up until I can do a batch of CP.

Theres not a whole lot of wastage.

    Whats that?

You mean that there might be an end in sight? I started to think like that when I had about 20Kgs stashed away, now at 65Kgs and forever climbing .... I dont think there really is an end to this great pastime, you just get more deeply involved and find new ways to enjoy

Cant believe I didnt think of it earlier, but Ive updated the spreadsheet to include a PIE GRAPH ( http://tinyurl.com/g2mvd )

    http://users.tpg.com.au/adsli4ll/LEAVEUP/Green%20Bean%20Inventory%20-%2028-03-06a.xls

I reckon it will be useful for stock control at a glance.
Lets you see what youve got LOTS of and whats running out soon very easily, even when hungover, rather than having to scan through the list.

Expect to add some new and exciting slices of http://tinyurl.com/g2mvd when the new Polls are out ;D

    Java,

I figured you would have rigged up a Klaxon that automatically sounded as soon as you reached 10kg followed by a lot of running around McHales Navy style ;D

I tried that but it made the neighbors think a we were under attack and they paniced and dissapeared into their basement and now refuse to come out.

The city also didnt like my distress flares and the traffic jam they caused on the freeway and have threatened to stick the klaxon in a bodily orifice which would be most uncomfortable should I ever even contemplate such a display again.

Hhhmmm.....My 100+kg stash of just 4 months ago has all but dissapeared now that the Gothot is up and running. I found myself contemplating the big week-end roast and suddenly realized I only had about 3kg left! EEK!!!

So this morning I called up my main local supplier and put in an order for some 21 new coffees that are in and picked them up this afternoon. So while Im no longer looking at bare shelves Ive yet to get back up to the higher numbers. That will probably happen in a couple of months when the new crops start reaching us here. But for now Im feeling happy with the 45kg or so of beans smiling at me from the BSF. That should be enough to see me through the next month and a half or two. ;D

yay, im not the only one in the clydesdale weight class. Lets just hope its not Andy with some left-overs from this months distributions, or some advance shipment of next months!

Erm, and in light of my now WAY TOO EXCESSIVE stash, if anyone in Sydney is after a kilo of beans and are happy to come collect them, just let me know, Im sure I can sort you out. Same goes for local new roasters who may want a few different beans, if Andys newbie packs are unavailable Im sure I have plenty to share.

Ive been using the "Coffee Trails" database for a couple of weeks, but I dont think its been worked on since the beta release in 2003. Ill have to give CRDB a go.

I recently installed some additional cupboards up on the walls in the laundry. I stupidly did this without receiving prior approval from management.

SO walks in while Im half way through drilling noisy holes with the trusty hammer drill "what are they for?" she asks. "Extra storage is my reply - we need it".

    Long pause.

"Theyre really for your coffee beans arent they".

"Yes" is all I can reply with my head hung low. No use trying to fool her. I need training from my 4 yr old on how to think of fast excuses.

Busted! I guess it was a giveaway when I mounted them so high up on the wall she cant even reach the handles. ;D

Now to fill the shelves..and then get a bigger roaster...and then a HX machine

Re: How big is your stash?

Stash size is only really relevant when put up against monthly consumption. I roast about 2kg a month and so my aim is to keep stocks fairly constant at about 25kg (years supply). Obviously green beans are still good for some time longer than a year so a larger stash wouldnt be ridiculous.
The idea is to set the cap low, resist exceeding it for as long as humanly possible and then set yourself a new, higher cap, justifying it by such things as mentioned by poundy above. Then you have so many beans that you have to find a means of roasting in larger batches. As such, your coffee consumption must increase. Where it ends? Who knows, perhaps thats the thrill of the journey?

when I started typing this, there were 8 people below 50kg, 5 above.  My number isnt that strange, is it.....

And to be honest, I started out thinking the same way you did, "Who needs more than a few kilos of beans?"

"Oh look, those plastic wheeled storage boxes with lids are on sale. Ill just grab one to put those couple of different bean types I have into"

"Oh look, a new month and a new bean on offer, havent tried any of those before. Better grab a bit"

"oh look, the wheelie plastic bins are on sale again. Lets grab 4 this time, the stash has grown and Im sure I can find other things to put in them"

"oh look, a new month, a new four bean types to try. Really liked last months beans, better make sure I buy 5kg of each this time around"

"oh look, ran out of space in the bins I had beans in, better find a cardboard box to put that other stuff in so I can use it for beans"

"oh look, the shelves in the garage are full of beans, better look away"

"oh look, some more beans on offer, well Ive got that many that another 5kg of those few wont matter will it"
