Re: Columbia Pensilvania Supremo chaff remained after roasting

I havent roasted this variety of Colombian beans, so I cant really comment on the roasting profile. When you say the beans were still popping when you stopped the roast, was the sound like popcorn popping or was it more subtle like cellophane crackling? If it was the former, it was probably still first crack. Why dont you post a photo and we can better judge by the colour of the beans.
BTW, if you want a membership card, just order one with you next BeanBay purchase. Youll find it in the Other Stuff section of BeanBay.

Hi decepid, Id love to be able to offer an insight to your query but I really would only be guessing. Perhaps you could try following one of your known successful profiles and see if the "ugliness" reoccurs and that will remove one of the variables.

    Howdy,

I just finished my third roast with my new Gene. The first two were with Brazil Ipanema beans which came out wonderful, even, and clean looking.

The Columbia Supremo however, did not.

The Gene had just completed a roast and so was still hot.
I have been setting my Gene to 150 degrees for 5 mins, then up to 240 til first crack, then down to 228 til done.

I noticed that quite a while before first crack had come, the beans were already getting dark, and still had their husks on them. I turned the temp down, and saw the husks slowly coming off, but then had to stop the roast at 17 mins as they were at the level i think i am after (no members card yet, so cant comment on CS#). No idea if i got to second crack or not.. there was popping when i stopped but it could have been first crack still.

The beans are now quite ugly, with bits of husk still attached to around 30% of the beans

Does this sound common for this type of bean or does it sound like i had the temp set too high for it?
Working...
