  • Hottop B Yemen Escapees

    Hi all,
Bizarre experience yesterday roasting Yemen Ismail, some beans kept falling out the bottom chute? It was a mix of small & some large beans. I have roasted Yemen before & its never happened. Has this happened before to anyone?
    Is it operator error?
    Thanks
    Carla

    Re: Hottop B Yemen Escapees

It depends on the age of the machine. If it is older, Hottop USA has an updated eject door replacement with a stronger spring that is designed to eliminate this problem (more recent models should have had the updated parts installed, new from the factory). With the older versions it was mostly a problem with small beans. Check with Greg or your reseller to see if the kit is available in Australia.

I had exactly the same problem when I roasted my 2nd batch of Yemen. At the time I thought it was because I did not allow the roaster to cool enough after the previous roast because it did not happen on my 1st Yemen batch. After your experience Im not so sure now. Ill check with the next batch this week.

        Re: Hottop B Yemen Escapees

Strange never had this problem on my earlier model P? Sounds like you could also have a build up problem around the solenoid or door mech that is stopping it from closing properly especially if you are doing back to back roasts of this chaffy bean?

If you have been using your Hottops for more than 6 months then consider a proper pull down and clean as chaff and oils to build up in all sorts of places under the cooling tray platform and inside the rear motor housing and control area. MAKE SURE it is unplugged before you start. Apart from the fire risk long term chaff will get inside motors fans etc and may cause problems.

              Re: Hottop B Yemen Escapees

Philips head screwdriver is the only tool needed for most of it

Also some good info on Randy Gs site and also search the HottopUSA site if you get stuck on how to remove the cooling tray cover (trickiest bit) http://www.espressomyespresso.com/

I cant post the URL here, but the Hottop USA website has all the information you need including full, step-by-step repair procedures to remove and replace virtually every part on the machine.

Mine was cleaned not so long ago, so hopefully it was because I had not allowed it to cool enough. I tend to strip and clean quite often.

                    Re: Hottop B Yemen Escapees

We had one unit returned to us for a warranty repair and a bean had managed to jam in the door just as the door was closing, thus lodging it open. Beans all came out as soon as they were loaded, but you could have a similar result if a smaller bean managed to lodge there. Definitely worth an eyeball, take off the front cover (unscrew gold knob) and shine a torch down there and see if the door is fully closed.

Thanks Greg, Ill definately do that 1st. But I think she could do with a full strip down & clean too.

With the front cover off, use a long probe (chopstick or screwdriver) and push the eject door open and allow it to close a few times., It cannot be damaged that way (it is held closed by spring force) . You will get some idea if it is opening and closing smoothly.

Update after another batch of Yemen today:

No problems with eject chute this time,  [smiley=thumbup.gif] so suspect either a stuck bean or insufficient cooling last time.

Thanks Graham. I wonder if that was my issue too. I did another 4 roasts after the yemen & no problems.......... Mind you, they were all different beans. Maybe before I pull her apart I should do a test run with some yemen.
