  • !st time coffee roast

I attempted my very first roast using a Brevill crazy popcorn popper.
This has 1250 watts and I found it very satisfactory with the first roast being completed in just under 10 minutes. This seemed a good time frame to me.
The beans that I roasted were Ugadan Masaba AA . I then roasted Brazil Pulped Natural beans whilst these were succesful they did not seem to colour quite as dark as the Ugandan one did. Does anyone know if this is normal or should I have left them in longer, they were in longer than 10 minutes but I did not get a second crack, I did not want to burn them so  took them out they look fine except for the colour.

    Re: !st time coffee roast

Im definately no Popper expert, having only used one a few times about a year ago, and Im sure a Popper expert will give better advice. However I would suggest you use your senses, smell, sight & sound, rather than pure time to decide on when to eject them, as there are a range of variables that can affect the timings. I would personally suggest allowing the Brazil get just into the start of the 2nd crack next time, and see how they go. If I remember correctly judging colour in a Popper is a bit difficult, but you will better develop sound and smell senses with practice.

However you may also find the ones you have done already may be satisfactory in the cup anyway

      10 minutes is good.
Most Crazy Poppers, unmodified, usually roast in 5 minutes.
It is colder now so maybe that helped a little. Where are you?

You didnt say if the Ugandans got to second crack.

If they arent as dark as the first roast then you could have left them a bit longer if thats what you were after.

How many grams in your batches?
      Do you have a chimney?

      It just takes some practice.

Thanx to Thundergod and GrahamK for the positive replies to my first post.. there was 80 grams in these batches and yes I have a chimney
The Ugandans did go to second crack the only difference was that I had 120grams in the popper I live in the Adelaide Hills and it was pretty cold that day.

The only reason I did not leave them any longer was because I did not want to burn them. [smiley=smiley.gif]
