How about you lower the popper, get some neon, tint, loud pearlescent metallic paint and a coupla subbies.....Then itd be FULLY SICK and ready for Chapel St Melb- Any weekend nite you like mate   ;D
If you write "Type R"  (the R in red) on the side of the popper or the exhaust tip, then it will be far more powerful.

This is a well known fact around Chapel St (Melb) or Bankstown (Sydney)

    For proof, see http://www.angelfire.com/nc2/mycoffeecan/page1.html

    Re: Chimneys?

If you clicked the link in my post above (the words "Bling Popper", though theyre not underlined...), you would have seen it already. IIRC the hole in the B&D popper is 67mm, and this matches exactly the OD of the necked down section of the exhaust tip. I paid $20 for it, which isnt much in the long run...

If you want to guarantee the fit, take your popper into the shop and try a few. I didnt do this (just measured each part carefully), but Im sure it would be worthy of a chuckle...

Any exhaust shop should also be able to make you a similar piece to any length etc. They have hydraulic flaring tools to do the same shape. Like I said, mine could be longer some times... And made of stainless would be cool (though more expensive).

It never actually comes off, even after dozens of roasts, nor does it vapourise. The smoke coming from the beans is probably more toxic. Could always go and pick up an exhaust tip and fully sick your popper up.

On the topic of soup tin chimneys: Does anyone have any thoughts on the toxicity (or otherwise) of fumes from the heating up of remnant soup tin label glue/gum on the outside of the chimney while roasting? I cant seem to remove every last bit of this stuff and am hoping it either doesnt melt or is safe to accidentally inhale (Cant imagine its good for you).

Hi Brekel and welcome to CS!

Its a bit all of the above. The best version of the chimney Ive seen is the exhaust tip . The use of a chimney should allow you to roast up to 140g keep the beans in and slow things down....all of which are bonuses.

Keep things moving at the beginning and then listen and watch....its all fun form there on...

    Good luck!

Damn straight, the Bling Poppers chrome tip works superbly! ;D Though the tip without the rolled lip would be better - it sometimes catches beans when you pour them out.

I was roasting 170-180g batches of your blend last night. 4 batches, only a 5 minute popper cool down between ~9-10 minute roasts. Beans still wanted to jump out by the end, a colander had to sit on top to stop it...

*thread drift* The turbo-cooler was working a treat. I dug up an industrial fan Id forgotten about from the back of the garage (160W power rating, ~8 cubic metres/min). It cooled the beans down in under a minute! Hold 2 colanders together in a ball, and the beans just fly around inside! will post a pic soon...

There is lots of discussion on CG and elsewhere. You will however get really good results out of the box. Id suggest thst you get everything else worked out before you jump and spend and mod

    Thanks guys!

Im looking forward to my first roast.

One other question: Im considering modifying a popper to give microprocessor control of the temperature. Do you know any websites that give recommended temp/time profiles?

    started a topic Chimneys?

    Chimneys?

    Hi.

Im new here, so forgive me if Im asking something stupid/already asked.

It seems that everyone here puts a chimney on their popper, but several sites on the web dont mention doing this.

What are the benefits?  Is it only being able to fit more beans?  Or stopping them from flying out?  Does it alter the temp/time profile?Or are there other reasons?

    Thanks.
Working...
