Ive bought green beans off ebay for a few years now (Im only new to CS). Ive found them to be satisfactory, if a little vague on the regional names. You simply by PNG beans, or Columbian beans.
A few years ago I tried to sell green beans on ebay because no one else was doing it.
I managed only one sale and then the ebay roasters all started selling greens and trying to undercut my price.
The only satisfaction I got when I finally gave up was that none them made any sales of greens.

Doing a quick search of ebay now shows as you say, vague regional descriptions so you really dont know if youre getting value for money.

Whereas with Coffee Snobs greens you know what youre buying and the delivery costs are comparable and possibly cheaper.

Even with bad beans, Im still a long, long way ahead of the best coffee in Meeka, which comes in a carton with the word Iced in front of it.

But yes, Bean bay is cheaper if you buy a bunch of it. Trying to convince the missus that I really do need 12.5kg of beans from various locations around the world is the tricky part. She doesnt drink coffee, so Im looking at ways to sparkle up a hot chocolate as a way to help justify the new Isomac.

Im guessing even with the bad beans you are drinking the best coffee available in Meeka ;D

Im also guessing that given your location ebay is one of the shops you shop at most. Im a bit surprised though that you would buy coffee off ebay because from what ive seen bean bay coffee is far cheaper.

Glad you got to the bottom of it.

Okay, so I roasted a batch in the popper today, and......... aroma-less. To test if it was me (im a bit snotted up at the moment) I did a quick roast of some Ugandan Masaba (250g) in the Behmor. The result was more flavoursome than the other batches I;ve roasted.

So it looks like it was the beans that I forked out a smallish amount of money for. And it looks like I am a bit of a twat. ;D

So, Ive ordered some Harrar Longberry and some Indian Nuggets tonight, and hopefully they will smell like proverbial roses when Im done with them.

Thanks to Greg for pointing out the bleedin obvious.

You can carefully lift the left hand side of the drum and disengage it or you can turn it off remove the drum then close the door and hit cool and let it run the cooling cycle.

Cheers Gra.. Ps I have been cooling externally after doing my first roast no probs..

if one was to cool externally (which I wouldnt do, as it would nullify the warranty) would one pull out the drum while the machine is on, and let the cool cycle continue until its end, or cancel the roast and remove the drum, then let the machine sit idle for half an hour? :-?

Ive previously been using a Crazy Popper, and made the jump to Behmor a few weeks ago.

Im half a dozen roasts in now, and besides finding it difficult to control the finish of the roast, Im noticing that the roasted beans dont have the same strong aromas that the Crazy Popper beans had.
    Hi Big Louie

You will find it much easier to control the roast if you cool the beans externally and then let the Behmor go through its cooling cycle .

This way you can decide how far from F/C in to S/C as how dark you what your roast to be. This makes it easy to be able to repeat the roast where as cooling in the Behmor you are looking at 12:00mins against 1:00 - 2:00mins externally..

Worth a try see how you go..

    Cheers Gra..

Okay, Im going to do some more trials today with the different methods, same pre blended green beans, same CS score (or as close as I can get it to the same) and the only variance (within my capabilities) being the roast method, one batch in the Behmor, one in the Crazy Popper.

    Ill report back when done.

As its very difficult to stop the roast at the right time in a Crazy Popper, possibly the beans have been roasted really dark, intensifying the aroma. Have the beans you roasted in the Behmor been roasted to the same colour?

    Big Louie...

Are you comparing aroma produced by the same beans with the only difference being the roast method? Or, have both the roast method and the beans been altered? Youve gotta be careful that you compare like with like when it comes to coffee beans and Im just not sure what you mean..... :-?

Greg, Ive roasted these in the popper as well, and there has been more aroma from that roasting method than in the Behmor.

And I dont think that just because Ive bought beans from eBay they are guaranteed to be bad beans. Ive got 7kg of beans from bean bay (plus another 2.5kg of Yirg from tonight) sitting in my shed waiting for my Behmor skills to improve.

I appreciate that youve been burned with dodgy beans, but dont paint everything with the same brush.

So to my original point, is the lack of aroma something Im imagining, or is it commonplace?

... and the quality is lacking!?

    How surprising. :

Quality coffee starts with quality beans. If thats not there, nothing you do can bring it back. Try some of the Bean Bay greens, and then ask whatever question is present. (Sorry, but Ive had too many bad beans to shop somewhere in which I have no confidence.)

It could be the beans (Im chewing through a 2 kilo bag of pre blended green beans off ebay, hoping Ill get the hang of it before I start on the good beans), or a number of other variables.

Has anyone else noticed this with the Behmor roaster?
Working...
