Boris- Id like to see that set up!
If you get the camera out so will I. I can show what I have at the moment in terms of collander and heatgun.
    Thanks

I use a hand held flour sieve, ultra fine mesh on the bottom, four vanes for agitation. The beans do get stuck occassionally, but I use a battery drill which has a torque clutch. When the beans do get stuck, the clutch allows the agitator to slip, and clears the bean by itself. Easy to hear first and second crack. One day Ill get the camera out.

Im thinking of attaching an upturned collander with a hole in the top for the heat gun and another hole for a drill with whisk. :-/
    What do ya reckon?
    Has anyone tried this?
    Hi RH,

I have seen pics of home made roasters that have used electric drills to turn a shaft.
My thought is that all drills are bit noisy, and you would probably have difficulty hearing second crack, however there should be other power sources that are less inherently noisy,..
Apart from that, without seeing the colander Im not sure how good mechanical agitation would be from the point of view of beans possibly catching on some of the holes in the colander, depends on relative size of holes and beans and shape of colander I expect, with smaller holes the better I guess. (On the other hand might even help with chaff removal?)

I would still like to see if it is possible to work out a method of rotating the colander like a drum, and using the heat gun to do the heating????
Got some ideas in my head, need a chance to play around a bit.

Am keen to have a look at your new setup.

And yes Mal, after seeing the roast beans at about 36hrs, they did appear very evenly roasted, and blended with some other beans made a nice brew in Silvia. I expect will improve a bit more with another day or so.

    Hi RH,

Sounds like a great roast though, almost ideal timing and should taste great in the cup [smiley=thumbsup.gif],

    heatgun ideas

Just tried my first heat gun roast. : It went well. I did as was suggested somewhere and place a SS colander into another pot, ( in my case a cast iron one I had experimented with gas roasting.) This meant that the hot air was able to whoosh around under the collander as well as directly onto the beans. It was great for chaff removal- something the gas roasts just couldnt do! I deliberately kept the gun back a bit to see how it would all go and not wanting it to roast too fast. after the 1st crack ( which was very clear) I switched it down to low. 1st crack was round 11 minutes, second round 14 and I finished up at 16 and a half.
