I was so impressed with the uniformity that Vinitasse got, that I decided to try a stovetop roast myself.

though my effort is a tad more uneven and prolly more like a cs8 (maybe 500g in a smallish pot was a bit ambitious ;D), Im happy with the result .. let you know in a couple of days how it tastes.

It looks lilke you are having fun and success. I have only pan roasted a couple of times to finnish a roast in hot weather when my popper has cut out.

I also received my El Salvador Chaparrastique today but haven’t roasted it yet.

I did roast my Nepal Plantec today. I couldn’t wait for it to degas before having a taste. Straight out of the roaster it is a little earthy, possibly the yak poo showing through. There was a very pleasant after taste that lingered on.

I will taste it again after a couple or three days.

started a topic First pan roast

    First pan roast

Thanks to Andy I recieved my very first BeanBay purchase today and inspite of the fact that my shiny new sample roaster is due to arrive on Thursday, I just couldnt wait and decided to go for my very first stove top pan roast. With the El Salvador Chaparrastique that just came through my front door and with a small stainless steel soup pot and a wooden spoon I set to with one cup of green. Using the smallest gas fob and with it set at its lowest setting I started stirring away vigorously. First crack commenced at 14 minutes and when the start of 2nd crack at 18 mins I dumped it into a steel mesh colander and then hit it with a hairdryer on its cool air setting and cooled away. Most of the chaff ended up on the floor, rather than out the back door as intended but I was pretty happy with the end result. I think I managed to hit CS9 with no tipping and that aint too shabby for a first attempt at stove top roasting in a soup pot. My impatience got to me again and I couldnt resist grinding away and tasting the end product. VERY NICE!!!! Nutty, smooth and rich with a hint of tobacco leaf and only a touch of CO2 induced tanginess as it cooled in the cup. Messy but fun! Will try another batch later tonight as I already drank the first one.

Working...
