  • your opinion on my T/Oven 2nd roast

How does it look to you guys - Ive taken pics with and without the flash.  Comparing my roast with some bought roast beans it would appear that I have achieved the right stage of roast - or am I delusional?  First crack was at 10 minutes and second around 14 minutes.

Thats looking pretty good from what I can determine, and timings sound good as well. You did not however mention what beans they were, so not sure if the roast level variation due to the bean or the roast, although its still pretty consistent.

Quite a difference in colour btw the flash and non flash. With the flash I would have said a good medium roast for plunger etc, but without the flash I would say OK for Espresso as well. Possibly my inexperience at looking at photograhic evidence.

Thanks and yes, the contrast between the pics is huge. Without the flash the it looks quite deeply roasted!

      The beans are
      150g Ethiopian Gambella sundried
      150g Brazil pulped natural
      100g Ethiopian Gunalimmu
100g Peru Ceja De Selva Estate.

        Gday Mocca....

Those images are waaayyy too big by the way...

Cant see much detail in the non-flash photo so will restrict my comments to the other. From close examination, the beans appear to have reached a range of roast depths and this may be down to the blend itself although I have never experienced that wide a variation with similar blends.

After looking at your Roaster Thread and the (HUGE) photos in there, I would have concerns that the agitation may not be optimal, given the design of the agitator. Have you had a look at the agitator design that has evolved over time for the KKTO? This design works extremely well and results in beautifully even roast batch outcomes - Might be worth buying one from Barazi and fitting it to your FPTO (Flower Pot TO) 8-)

Seems like the overall design is very capable though and I think if the agitation can be improved youll be on to a real winner. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

        Cheers mate,
        Mal.

Re: your opinion on my T/Oven 2nd roast

Sorry, I never realised the pics were so big on everyone elses screen except mine.  Here is a better view of the agitator - its still in prototype stage and will be replaced with a better unit once more free time is available.  But it does work reasonably well, and in this pic youll notice the outer lip pulls the beans in and the inner pushes them out (rotation is anticlockwise).   Ive tried several profiles - some going right to the very edge of the bowl, but this seams to work adequately and will do for now.  The next one will be similar to some of the other designs going around but with some alterations thrown in to suit my application.  Hopefully a better agitator will get a more even roast in the future.

          Thanks Mal  8-)

Re: your opinion on my T/Oven 2nd roast

Hi there. Its a good start. To me, the roast looks quite uneven - youve got beans there from light all the way thru to to quite dark. As others have suggested, constant agitation of every single bean, and even heat within the roast environment is critical.

Also, it could be down to the fact youre blending four different beans. Try a single type to start with as this will roast up at the same rate and you should end up with a better, more even roast.

              Hope this helps!

Re: your opinion on my T/Oven 2nd roast

This roast was a lot stronger than the first roast, which is not to my liking.  The first batch was much nicer, more appealing, smoother and generally more enjoyable - its weight was around 400g (I initially wrote it was 500g, but forgot that I removed some beans to avoid overloading the equipment on the maiden run) - it took 8 mins to crack and 12 mins for the final crack.  This current batch was 500g, took 10 mins and 14 mins.  I would say the current set up works best for less bean volume.  Improvements are to be made on the agitator, and Ill also change the bowl to a full colander type for proper air circulation which the T/O was designed for.

Overall, its a good set up that currently works best with lighter batches.  I also roasted some raw peanuts with the machine - they came out very well.
