  • Oh Dear

    Roasted some beans this morning.

The beans seemed to be moving well in the popper much more than normal.

First crack started at about 6 minutes I was thinking this is slow

At 13 minutes the roast had not reached second crack.

Then it dawned on me that I had forgot to tare the container when weighing out the beans so I was roasting about 70g rather than the usual 100g.

    (Too much Christmas? ) :-[

This was confirmed when the usual 250 ml container was not full like it usually is when I store the 100g roast in it.

So reducing the amount of beans in the popper will slow down the roast.

Possibly a 5 to 10 gram reduction would have been better ;D

    That should be the giveaway.

As a rule of thumb, fill the popper with beans to the top of the "shark gills" in the bottom, this will be about 80g and should produce a good roast in most poppers.

If you have more than that you might have to give them a stir to get them going with a chopstick or similar until they have lost enough water content to move on their own.

As you found, with less than shark gill quantity they will move too fast and not get enough direct heat contact.

We all learn our own tips and tricks along the way, thats half the fun!

    Enjoy the journey
