Gday Pete...
That batch in the photo looks pretty good to me mate. Give it a go in a few days time and I think you will be very pleasantly surprised.... 8-)

Re: Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
I wouldnt worry too much Pete
I have roasted this in both my Corretto setup and in the Behmor. The Behmor gives really uniform results depending on the bean.
My results look exactly the same.
It is just an uneven bean.
Nice in the cup though, and thats what counts

Re: Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
thanks guys.
had both of these, I did think of picking out the yuck ones but wasnt sure if that was the done thing.Originally posted by 745059595A5A6074504C52503F0 link=1294210951/3#3 date=12942354062) Grading as in small medium and large beans mixed together
3) Damaged beans mixed in with good beans
After reading the Beta and WSully threads (repeatedly!), I do this every time - Thaw setting for 3 mins then start proper.Originally posted by 745059595A5A6074504C52503F0 link=1294210951/3#3 date=1294235406you can perform a stabilising pre roast by pre heating the roast at normal agitation at thaw setting to 125 deg Celsius for up to 5 min
Ive tested my agitator a few times with greens and bean sized Lego pieces, there seemed to be pretty good movement - inside/outside and none getting buried - Im not at all saying its perfect tho so ill have another look.Originally posted by 59534651515E4A4C3F0 link=1294210951/4#4 date=1294262242All those KK lists as well as factors such as poor agitation or temp control while roasting.

Thank you FlynnOriginally posted by 7E74617676796D6B180 link=1294210951/4#4 date=1294262242All those KK lists as well as factors such as poor agitation or temp control while roasting.
Yes I forgot to add agitation and heat as possible factors
On the kit set I spent countless hours of research & development with heat to volume equilibrium and fine tuning the agitator to have a complete mixing action rather than to push a mass of coffee beans around the roasting bowl
PeteL has a home made KKTO and may not act the same way as the kit

All those KK lists as well as factors such as poor agitation or temp control while roasting. I agree with Mals suggestion of showing us a pic of your next roastOriginally posted by 694D444447477D694D514F4D220 link=1294210951/3#3 date=1294235406A few factors will give you uneven roasts
I never worry about processing beans except a quick check for the occasional stone.
If you want to go to the trouble, process your beans as KK suggests then compare it to an unprocessed batch.

Re: Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
A few factors will give you uneven roasts
1) Berries picked not quite ripe and mixed or processed with ripe berries
2) Grading as in small medium and large beans mixed together
3) Damaged beans mixed in with good beans
My observation of African dry processed beans normally show some of the above traits (however good well graded shipments do come often as well)
To overcome any roasting problems theres 2 things one can do
Hand sort by eye and remove bad or damaged beans prior to roasting
For the KKTO style roaster you can perform a stabilising pre roast by pre heating the roast at normal agitation at thaw setting to 125 deg Celsius for up to 5 min
Then zero the time and start the roast proper
This will give you a more even result but will not eliminate it completely as any green or damaged beans at time of picking will be exposed at the end of the roast (even if they look ok to the eye)

Re: Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
Thanks Mal, that helps. Ill post a pic soon. Im still trying to figure out FC and SC plus the fact that until I get my laptop sorted Im RoastMonitor-less, I think I pulled this one at around 20mins. I have just gone crazy with the InsulBrite so I think my heat retention capabilities are better now as I think I was struggling to get to temp in good time.

Re: Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
Hi Pete....
A bit of colour unevenness is quite typical, as per this photo from another thread, but it shouldnt be too broad across the spectrum - Especially when using KKTO as these roasters really do produce very evenly coloured roasts.

Maybe you could take a couple photos and post em up here for comment? For my taste, I dont take them any further than the first few snaps of 2nd-Crack and use a roast profile that gets em there in about 18 minutes....
KK will no doubt be along when he gets a chance but I hope the above is helpful....
Cheers,
Mal.

Trouble with Ghimbi in KKTO
Hi All,
just wondering if any KKTOers (or modded variants) have roasted any Ghimbi yet. I was really looking forward to this bean but so far the taste and roasts are just a bit average - of which Ive no doubt its my fault.
On my modded KKTO (sorry, no DMM stats or CS colour card yet) I did two batches, one 500g and one 750g, both were really uneven. I read in beanbay that with the Harrar "Dont worry about a splotchy coloured roast, dry processed beans do that" - should I then anticipate a splotchy roast with the Ghimbi?
Any comments appreciated.
