Re: Beginners bean
//\/ what they said, even though Im only a beginner I liked it enough to buy another 2.5kg after my starter pack and its a great bean to use in a blend I found as well.

Re: Beginners bean
Yep, Ill second what flynn_aus said. Peru ceja de selva is a good one, not just to start with. I usually drink straight double espressos.

Re: Beginners bean
I assume you will have the Peru Ceja de Selva in the Starter pack. Thats a good bean to start with - easier than most and theres plenty more when the starter pack runs out.
How dark you roast it is up to you but thats part of the learning experience. You can try one all the way to black first up so you can observe all the stages of the roast. Then, roast a few batches at various depths and try them at various days post-roast to judge when you think it is best drinking.
My preference is for lighter roasts at the first sign of second crack or just before and best enjoyed from about day 12 onwards. But thats my taste. If you like darker, try about 30 seconds into rolling second crack.
But youre posting in the wrong section, Try browsing through the Home Roasting - Tips & Tricks board

Re: Beginners bean
What are you planning on roasting with? If you are using a popper, youll get around 7 roasts out of each 500gm bag, which is a fair bit of trial and error.
Id at least do a couple of roasts of each, then order 2.5kg of one that I liked to practice on.

Beginners bean
Can anybody recommend a good bean for learning to roast with for someones who likes coffee short and dark?
I guess I want something where what I learn from roasting it will help me whatever bean Im roasting.
I bought a starter pack but I think I want to experiment a lot with one bean or one green blend before I complicate things by changing beans too much.
