  • Is a 22 minute roast too long from a popper?

Ill make another thread for what weve actually done with the popper but for now Im just wondering if this is too long.

When I pulled it, Peru, at 22 minutes it had just reached second crack literally, the first pop sounded.  It had reached 230 degrees.

When putting the beans away there was a sweet cocoa smell.

Pulling at the beginning of 2nd crack is where I like my Peruvian.

My popper would be on fire after 8 mins, so what have you done to tame the heat?!

Mustve been a cold, cold day in Newcastle.

Pulling at first snaps of 2nd crack is good. 22 mins - maybe a bit long, but should still be ok. They look good from the pic, sweet cocoa, eh? Mmmm. Let em rest for a few days or so and get stuck in.

My wondering is along the lines of drying out to much.

The smell today, almost the end of day two has changed to a nutty smell but still has the cocoa/chocolately smell to it.

Our air conditioning is on permanently and stays at 19-21 degrees, and I roast in the kitchen which sits directly in front of the air conditioner.

I did try a shortened roast last night after reading different specs and degrees on other posts but it just turned out bitter with hardly any smell and was also lighter than the above one.

It should be fine shifter.... 8-)

Its more about the profile than the actual roast duration but 22 minutes is probably about as long as you want to go. Pull 4-5 minutes off that time and it will be close to perfect.

Did you use the CS Roast Monitoring Software to aid in controlling the profile? Would be great to see it if you could post it up here mate.... Yeah I know, Im a nosey bugger :

Unfortunately not Mal, we run Linux on all our PCs, we are going to see if Windows under Virtual Box can do it but were not sure it can.

I have kept hand notes though as I want the roasts to be repeatable to a certain degree. I am going to add all of that in the thread about the popper.

Hi, it is possible to run the USB datalogger software under Linux, despite lack of support.

You can use Andrew Tridgells python version http://samba.org/tridge/pyRoast
                See http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1259627839

If you look in the RawMeterReader.c source file you can see how to run compile and run it.

Ive been using version 2.1 of the Windows version under Java on Ubuntu Lucid, and its fairly stable. Ive been corresponding with Andy about problems with the 2.4 version.

                No official support obviously.

                Have fun and good luck

                Russell

Re: Is a 22 minute roast too long from a popper?

Id be more concerned about time between first and second crack than total duration.
Have had some sh#t 22.min roasts, but first crack ran straight into second. As long as you get a good gap between first and second, you should be ok, but you might want to shorten it a bit by ramping more quickly to first. I usually pull my popper roasts just before second at the moment, but that is just experimenting with flavours and brew methods.

Russell - thanks for that info on linux. As my old
laptop runs ubuntu, that will come in useful when I finally do get a datalogger.

Time between first and second was 4 minutes.

22 minutes is definitely on the long side, but could well be interesting. Ive had roasts of that length from the baby roaster, and from a steamer / wooden spoon combination that we used camping, which have turned out very well. One had a very pronounced honey-like aroma during grinding that was quite intriguing; it didnt carry over to the cup though. I think there is much different chemistry during these longer roasts that can sometimes work.

Wow, 22 minutes! The longest I got with my Crazy Popper was 6 minutes, when it was really windy outside. Most times I cant even tell 1st from 2nd crack.

I need to cool that thing down somehow...
                          Cheers
                          Steffen.

You are unlikely to manage these kind of roast times, unless you have a modified popper.
There are several threads on tweaking poppers to provide more control, but a recent one is at:
                            http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1292323422

I have had quite good results just adding a triac based power controller on the input cable, but the best solution is to have separate heat and fan control.

shifter has a modified popper by the way....
