    Re: DMM probe position

Scarey, same BM as me! Nice. I think if the stainless probe is too long, Inc handle, I will raise the BM on taller feet, or put a hole in my new roasting station (under construction) under the BM.

Mine is mounted pretty much as Mal described and its been excellent - you can see it at http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1255484417/11#11

I had one of the plastic handled SS probes - I just trimmed about 1 cm off the plastic, made a notch in the remainder so the wires exited to the side and filled with hot glue.  With the handle touching the table, the probe tip is ~1.5cm into the pan.

    Nice & easy.

I certainly dont find the probe through the side to be an issue to remove and some 40+ roasts with my corretto and I have never forgotten to remove it.

My roasting process if methodical and repeatable and I certainly dont find that there is a flurry of activity at the end which may cause me to forget this process. I am still able to drop beans and have them cooled back to room temprature within 60 seconds using my cooling bin.

I am sure the underneath probe can be done, but I dont personally see the need to go to the level of effort required to make it happen.

James you will also need a lot of empty space under the BM as the probe extends about 100mm of just handle + any remaining steel probe
My advise is tie a magnet on the probe and attach it to the side of the pan from the top

You will however need to protect any exposed plastic from heat so it wont melt (eg probe handle)

    KK
This probably varies from one BM to another KK....

I know with our BM, mounting from the bottom would only present the problem described above. Im sure James will suss it out OK....

    Mal.
Just to clarify my meaning of empty space under the machine :

The bench the BM unit is placed on is what I meant
So an access hole on the bench/table may be required for the probe to enter the underside of the BM
Alternatively a stand with enough clearance will also be good

Anyway I am sure it would have cropped up in James trial and test

Nice, so no real reason to not do this... I am sure removing the pan after roast is far more violent and quick than returning it. So far I have removed, dumped beans, sit pan on bench out of BM as the inside of the BM usually needs a clean out. Putting the pan back in could become a careful process though...

    Re: DMM probe position

Probably a good place to position it James....

Might be a little more difficult to "thread through" when putting the bread-pan back in but I spose theres no reason why you couldnt slot the hole in the bread-pan a little to allow for a less than perfect re-entry.... ;D

As far as depth goes, the actual t/c junction is right at the tip of the s/s probe so you would need to aim for this to be somewhere in the middle of the bean mass column for the smallest batch size that you are likely to roast. Also, would need to locate it at the opposite end to where the heatgun nozzle air-flow is directed, to avoid transient readings.

Thats about it I guess. No doubt others who have opted for this fixing site will chip in with their experiences but this more or less covers the basics....

    Cheers mate,
    Mal.

started a topic DMM probe position

    DMM probe position

Hey yas, I know there is info scattered around about this in random threads, but I struggled to find a specific thread about this (yeah I searched like a good lad).

My DMM is on order from beanbay (joy), now Im thinking about the best position in the BM for it.

I realise that "in through the side" works, but if you dont pull the probe after the roast, you smash the probe up.

Has anyone had any success mounting the probe from under the BM? up-wards in to the mixing bowl?

I removed the bottom case of the BM to take a look, seems like it will go fine, just in next to the pulley/belt that turns the mixing paddle.

Would love to hear what other experienced folk have done with theirs so I dont turn my BM in to swiss cheese.
Working...
