    Re: First Popper Roasting

So that was my first roasting attempt (followed by vacuuming a lot of chaff!).

Id love to hear your thoughts and criticism! Like I said I dont know much and Im learning all the time!

I will let you know what my novice palate thinks in a few days!

I still have another sample pack (cant remember where from) but will post up pics when its roasted!

    Thanks for reading!

    Re: First Popper Roasting

As i couldnt hear first or second crack, I decided to see what result I would get roasting for 9 minutes instead of 12. Indian Catimore again.

The end result was this (12 minute roast on right; 9 minute on left)

Ended up somewhere between the first popcorn attempt and the 12 minute roasts.

After this I decided to roast the last of my columbian organic (about 40g) in the popcorn maker to see how far I could get them to go.

Almost 17 minutes later I had these three roasts ready to be bagged.

The last popcorn effort is on the right. It is still lighter than the 9 minute popper roast. It appears that the popcorn maker doesnt have the power to take the beans to second crack.

Confident that Id got the bean disappearance down to a minimum (a few still made it around my makeshift shroud) I decided to go 100g of Indian Catimore in the popper. Once again, I timed 12 minutes of roasting and go beans that looked like this!

The lighting makes them look darker than they are, and they are similar in colour to the last bowl in the above picture. Unfortunately, I had some chaff problems (it went everywhere) and I left the beans in the roaster too long after roasting, and they started to smoke, so I fear that some of the beans have burnt edges. Smelt a bit that way too! Apart from that I was happy with the consistency in roast between the beans.

Here is a pic of my first three attempts from left to right. The middle one shows the first attempt in the popper where all the beans disappeared, and was taken after I removed a bunch of still green beans.

So next I had a go in the popper roaster.

Colombian again. This time about a 40g test

about 6 minutes later all my beans had disappeared!

It turned out that the roaster had collected all the bean in the chaff collector. If you look closely in the first picture you can see a slit in the back of the roaster where all the chaff goes. Well, all of the beans decided to spin there way into the chaff collector!

No idea when first crack took place as theyre so noisy spinning around I cant hear it.

So fabbed up a little cardboard flap to prevent the beans from entering the collector and had another go.

    beans before (Still Colombian):

Beans after 12 minutes in the roaster:

Much darker roast! yay! It seemed to be finishing second crack when I stopped roasting, and not much oil came off the beans in the hour after, so Im hoping it will be a success in the cup!

You can notice dark black spots on the beans - this isnt "tipping" - there are small screws and a crease in the metal of the roaster and as the beans circled at speed they seemed to have small chunks taken out of them by the metal. Not great but I really cant complain as the roaster is borrowed!

    They turned out like this:

First Popper Roasting - Not so good

So first go in the popcorn maker!
    Colombian organic first!
I used about 20g of beans just as a test to see how it went.

    All set up

I set my phone to time and watched eagerly as the beans changed colour. Due to the sound of the beans circling so quickly I couldnt hear the first crack, and due to the yellow lid I couldnt see much in the way of when they were ready.

Anyway, when I became impatient and stopped roasting the beans looked like this:

I dont know much about roasting, but they look as though they passed first crack and were not very far towards second crack. No idea on timing as I was so excited I forgot to check the timer!

Anyway it appears to be a light roast, and Ill probably try it in Dads aeropress first, and maybe plunger at work.

    First Popper Roasting

    Hi guys and girls!

I have recently become a big coffee fan, and so decided to have a go at roasting in my  little popcorn maker

Its a Sunbeam and probably cost $20. But I wanted to see what coffee I could produce for zero investment.

I was also lent a small (100g) popper roaster by my local cafe, and was keen to see how it went too!

    This is my cooling apparatus

For 100g of coffee it seemed to work well, shaking and swirling the beans in the pot in front of the fan would cool them in about 1 min.

And these were my beans! They are samples of about 200g each

    Colombian Organic
    Indian Catimore

    Time to get started!
Working...
