  • All of sudden Im Mr Popular

Must be something to do with giving away home roasts as gifts!

Add 250g of Bean Bay green to an iCoffee for 18 mins, bag it, tag it and its ready to rock n roll for around three bucks.

Pays back a thousand times over in good will

I hope you dont sell it for $3 when you do sell it to people.

Before you start getting too generous, and having people take advantage of you, make sure you work out all your costs - ie expected life of roaster, and how many $ per roast to use, including power, and factor in at least SOME of your time, bag cost etc.

When I did that, I worked it out to be about $8/250g for other people (and, realistically, thats even the cost for me to do it myself factoring in all costs).

Just dont sell yourself short or undervalue what youre giving away, thats all.

      Totally agree Richard.
JayBee - if you are not carefull you wont cover wear & tear let alone raw materials

For family & friends i normally charge $25 per kg and its been that price for 3 years now.
They are happy to pay and the coffee is always fresh and plus they get to try before buying.

Too right Richard, it would be a min of 10 bucks if i were to sell it!

        Mines for gifting only though.

I roast for someone at work and have worked out my roasted beans costs as approx 4 times the cost of the greens, works out to typically 40 to 50 bucks a kg depending on the bean

parents get beans for free as they always shout me lunch when im down here - so it works out evenish anyway

                  LMAO yeah thanks trent :P

I dont even get that far, I spoke to my sister last night who just buys whatever is espresso blend from wherever (read supermarket), I cant even convince her to buy some fresh coffee beans from a roaster.

                  Her "its just coffee"
Me "yeah but its stale coffee"
                  Her "its just coffee"

We have a family gathering in a few weeks so will be roasting and taking coffee with me, I bet nothing will change, theyll all still say "its just coffee", the only person Ive helped change is my father, have to start somewhere

Anyway Ill quit my whining and be thankful that Ive found such a great thing to be passionate about

                    Ha. Well see :P

I roast for my mum (but got to get her onto espresso at home - she isnt overly impressed with the plunger, but prefers it to instant).

I roast for one guy at work, and now, Ive gifted to my sister and brother, who both enjoy it. Its hard to convince people who wait for the $16/2kg specials at the supermarket to spend any more than that.

Re: All of sudden Im Mr Popular

Thanks for the kind words all.

Gosh, we have a whole variety of experiences with recipients of our fine wares! Everyone has been very receptive of my brews - but I have had to do some intensive plunger training to stop them ruining every cup they make. To be honest, the Nespresso machine in the office is probably the peak that most will ever get to, but from my perspective gifting gives me a chance to hone my roasting art - ie roast more, and justifies buying a greater variety of beans

My Mrs especially likes being able to take a bag along to a friends cofee morning. She is one person that really does enjoy a decent cuppa.

I did the logo a decade ago for a demonstation coffee related web-site, came in useful eventually!
