normally, is stopping the roast just after 2nd crack best practice?
Really depends.  I think either just after, or just before (unless you have a way to track temp, this would really involve a bit of guess work!) is generally the accepted norm.

I find this bean pretty forgiving.  Lighter roast will bring out more of the beans flavour and complexity.  Darker the roast, the more you will get a chocolatey taste, and lose some of the beans natural flavour characteristics...  this is often considered a bad thing, but i quite like the cocoa/chocolate flavours, so going into 2nd crack is no real issue for me!

Looks pretty nice... quite even for a popper roast from what I can see.

They certainly dont look burnt to me... generally with 2nd crack youll get a bit of smoke. If you didnt get that, chances are youve pulled them prior to 2C, although looking at the colour (which can be deceptive on a computer screen) you mustve been close.

I dont think you hit second crack from the looks of them but I could be wrong.

I did 3 lots of Peru on Monday in my popper and the time between 1C and 2C ranged from 4-7 minutes, total time including a 3 minute cooling time ranged from 18-21 minutes.

People say that 4 minutes is the best time between 1C and 2C I dont know why though.

    First Roast: Peru Popper Roast

    Hi all

Did my first ever roast today ( Peru Ceja de Selva Estate in unmodified Sunbeam Cornelius Popper).  What do you think?

I think its a bit uneven but overall im pleasantly surprised

    info
    100g green beans
    1st Crack began 2:33
    Finished approx 6:00
    Ambient Temp approx 16 degrees
Roast Temp: Unknown (need to get a thermometer/thermocouple)

    Questions

How long is first crack suppose to go for?

I couldnt hear a second crack...but then I started getting worried id burn the beans so stopped it the roast.  When should i be expecting the second crack?

its in a one way valve bag now, going to let it rest a few days then will do the first tast test.  cant wait!
Working...
