Another of the better "How-To" resources (aside from CoffeeSnobs ) on the Net is Sweet Marias. As other CSers have written above, there are no hard and fast rules re: home-roasting because there are just too many variables that will affect the outcome.

Have a squiz through the Sweet Marias guides and then adapt to suit to your particular setup and circumstances. Youll learn a lot more of the process along the way and this is a good thing.... 8-)

    All the best,
    Mal.

Trial and error. Hopefully, not too much error.

    Just go for it. [smiley=smiley.gif]

Im using a popper, too. Im using it outside so the temperature plays a big role, wind not so much since Im using a large desk fan to make my own wind.

I normally do six 100g batches in one session. I watch the first one closely for colour and smell and use the same timing for the others. I time the overall duration of the roast, the time when the chimney goes on (usually around 1st crack when the beans get light enough to jump out) and sometimes the time I turn off the fan (if the roast appears to take longer than 15 minutes). The overall length of a session happily coincides with the time it takes to smoke a medium sized bowl of tobacco

This has given me very consistent results so far and I dread the return of summer when I wont be able to cool down the popper enough and have to struggle with 6 minute roasts…

    Cheers
    Steffen.

It is because there are so many variables in roasting from where you roast and the temperature of where you are, whether there is wind (I had 2 crap roasts last weekend because I had to do it outside in the wind, I normally roast inside in the kitchen) to what type of set up you have and even then similar set ups are soooo different.

I use a popper and so do lots of other people but their poppers can not do what mine can ;D

Even something like having the same breadmaker can differ, they are not all made equal.

The biggest suggestion is just get in there and do it and figure it out along the way. That is the best part and the reason why I havent gone away from my popper, I love learning and the changing elements, my popper has the ability to do pre-program roasts but I still sick to my manual way

Start searching through the "Home Roasting" section.

Just turn your beans from brown to green, its that easy
I am sure for roasting it is turning green beans to brown beans  ;D

I dont think it would be at all easy to turn brown to green unless mould is involved :

Try "Corretto" - The Beginning in the Roasters forum for the corretto history. There is plenty of information in that forum and this forum if you look long enough.

Are you using the DMM and datalogging software? It really simplifies things if you are and there are plenty of sample profiles that you can use to get you started.

Tutorial on How to roast... Does it exist?

I have been surfing all day using the search button on this and another roasting site...to no avail.

I have found loads of tips on what to avoid while I roast, but none on how to roast from square one.

Can anyone point this helpless fellow in the right direction, please? I have acquired a coretto setup and have beans from Honduras, Uganda and Costa Rica...
Working...
