    Go for it...
I just started roasting... its good fun and what a learning experience.
I am going to chime in and say use the heat gun and stir, stir, stir!
The result get better and better...
Best advice to get what 1st and 2nd crack are... is to go ahead take 200grams and burn the crap out of it. Youll have a learning curve and colour changes are amazing.
Talking as a beginner I can honestly say it is very easy to get competant but like anything it probably will take forever to master... but hey once you start it will either hook you in or not... and the journey of roasting begins with the first crack.....
    Good Luck

    Hi Brett,
Even this newbie can vouch for the fun youll have.I grabbed an I-Roast 2 from Coffee Roasters
and have tried a few batches with great success.Last Saturday I felt like the Pied Piper with the
neighbours climbing the fence following the aroma.
One word of advice though. When you take it to work to demo for the boss dont park it under the A/C vent.
Much embarrassment when other tenants started complaining.

    Cheers,
    Ken.

im still enjoying my 25 year espresso making journey and am still finding out so much- the more you know the more you realise how little you know!
Once you get into home roasting youll think that your journey has just begun all over again.

Do you genuinely get better results. No.

You get AMAZING results, even from using just a $20 popper and some basic blending / roasting knowledge.

CS is where the best quality available beans are to be found.

And there are no stupid questions here. Just a really great, freindly group with lots of experience and helpful advice.

You gotta do it. Youll thank yourself for years to come...

    Yo Brett,

Take the plunge, its a soft landing here on the Snobs forum.

There are no "stupid questions", the vibe is always +ve and constructive.

I roasted my starter pack on a popper and with a bit of attention to the timing Im able to avoid the "pitting" that comes with a fast roast, Ive created a light roast on the colombians which I never thought Id enjoy as espresso but there you go, and Ive survived many a long night on the trusty Brazilian roasted to within an inch of its second crack.

Take control of you passion and start roasting now.

Experiment with the gassing of the beans, trial the roast profiles and test the grinds for the ambient conditions.

    YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPPOINTED.

    Hi Telemaster,

Im new & green, just like the beans I bought the starter pack and thought I would try the stove top. Thats right, cast iron pan with a small batch of beans. It was very easy, but a little messy with the chaf flying around. I read alot of the comments people had posted about the popper and the heat gun. I decided on the heat gun. $15 at Bunnings and off we go. I was really easy, great to watch the beans "evolve". Im no expert, but I am convinced that fresh coffee has to be better than "stale" coffee. Also, you can aslo get into blending which has got to be fun too.

Take the plunge, you wont regret it.

    Dom

    heatgun or popper?
    thanks

They each have their pros and cons and when all is said and done its really a personal decision as they both will do a good job of it once youve gotten used to them.

The main advantage of the popper over a heatgun is its hands free roasting ability out of the box. To roast hands free with a heatgun will require the making of a rig to hold the heatgun and another device to stir the beans.

The main advantages of the heatgun over the popper is its larger batch size and better control over the roasting process out of the box. You can modify a popper to give you full control over the roasting process by seperating the heating and fan circuits and adding controls to each but this is something that most people arent able/willing to do. Maximum batch size in a popper is usually about 150g while batches of 350g or more with a heatgun are common.

Heatguns are able to deal with a wider ambient temperature range than poppers are. Remember, roasting is an outdoor sport with poppers and heatguns! Poppers are far more sensitive to ambient temperatures than heatguns are.

At the basic level both systems will have roughly the same initial investment but to make the heatgun hands free will require additional investment. How much more will be determined by which route you choose to take. For a basic roasting set-up with the popper the only thing youll need besides the popper is a soup can chimney for it. With both methods youll need a way to quickly cool the beans down once the roast is complete.

I think that covers the main differences between them pretty well. I could be wrong though as its now 5:30am here and Ive been up for 24 hours. ;D :

I can second the heat gun as an easy entry into home roasting. I have had a go with each of the beans in my starter pack and have now just ordered 2 x 2.5 kgs to restock from BeanBay.

The whole process is very easy and the results are great.

    Hi Brett,

I tried both, having commenced roasting only a couple of months ago and now only use the heat gun because of the control. I can see what is happening with the beans and respond or act accordingly.

The results of roasting yourself are absolutely sensational.

probably sounds like a stupid question but it is genuine- but why?
    Because:
    • Youll have the freshest beans possible for your cuppa!
    • Youll get to taste coffees youll most likely never have the opportunity to taste otherwise.
    • Youll be able to roast to your exact tastes.
    • Youll save $$$.
    • Its fun!
    • And last but certainly not least because its what Snobs do! ;D

Most people start with a popper or heat gun because its a cheap and inexpensive way to try home roasting that, with a little practice, will yield excellent results and wont cost you your firstborn.

probably sounds like a stupid question but it is genuine- but why?
im really interested because im still enjoying my 25 year espresso making journey and am still finding out so much- the more you know the more you realise how little you know!
im enjoying the caffe bianchi blends im using- etrusco in particular- dark and rich, and am wondering is the popcorn method the best to start with?
is it just like home brewing- cheap and on tap (home brewers would no doubt disagree!) or do you genuinely get better results?
if it is the go, what to try and where from?
    thanks
