  • Roastin in the Rain

Ive been doing my roasting outside to prevent the caffeine overdose from doing several batches inside, but lately each day Ive planned to roast we have had rain. Can someone tell me if its OK to do it anyway with the cooler air and humidity? What difference will it make to the roast and taste (if any)?

Shouldnt make any difference to the taste, but depending on what method you use the cold weather can lengthen the time the roast takes. ie with a popper. Of course smoke inside is never much fun ....

Yar yar, in ze cooler climate of Hobartia I often roast undercover in cold and inclement weather, with the Belindarama/Corretto method it doesnt seem to make any difference once the heat in the bread pan is rockin along.

Perhaps an umbrella if you arent undercover - then you will need a hands free roast!   [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

        Hi Clare,

I aggree that it shouldnt make much difference for the roasting process if its raining, might even be slight benefit if it improves total time,
but I have wondered about the cooling of the beans after the roast.

Couple of times it has been raining lightly when Ive been roasting outside and my cooler would be blowing slightly damp air through the beans, which might help them cool quicker, but we dont want too much dampness in the cooling air.

The beans are then brought inside to a much lower humidity environment for degassing, and it doesnt seem to be a problem, for me,
but then my taste buds are only just budding so to speak.

        Regards
        Bullitt

Hi Clare- Roasting in the cold does add time to the roast- a beneficial thing with a popper. When I was regularly using my popper I was able to add 2 minutes to infinity when the temperature dropped! At 14-15 degrees it might last 9 minutes- at 10 degrees 11 minutes and at 6 degrees- :-? well I just kept on going at second crack never came! :-[
          But they tasted fine!

With this new improved method called "CHILL ROASTED"
Youll find your roasts 71% brighter
          82% more glossy
          95% tastier
