I noted there is much talk about measuring the heat in the popper - what type of thermometer do you use for this and where can you get them?
    thanks
    Jaxxx
I got a "thermocouple" used for measuring very high temps to within .5 of a degree from an auction site for $22, I use it with another attachment for measuring molten meterial and yet another for measuring the temp in my Raku furnace.

They contain to types of metal, they conduct electricity at different rates at different temps, this rate is measured and converted into degree for display in a monitor.
You can see mine in action with my old popper below

If you try Jaycar electronics or Dick Smith (they have branches in each state) they sell multimeters with thermocouple probe (either add on or part of the unit)

For example Jaycar QM1521 (including probe for temps up to 1000 deg C) will cost you $19.95!!!

Thanks for the tip JavaB - spoke to local Jaycar and will pick it up tomorrow for a roast tomorrow night. Got to love this community support!

          cheers

                Re: Breville Crazy Popper

"Jaycar QM1521 .... $19.95" Interesting. Is its temp device a probe (ie needle like,
with a handle) or a lead (piece of ins wire with a bead on the end)?

I bought one of the latter for $10 from Dick Smith. Plugs into my existing DMM.
I already had a probe, but was reluctant to stick it in a popper, as its short and
to get the tip in the bean mass  the handle would get pretty hot, and Im not
                sure of its rating.

However the lead is rated (I think conservatively) at 260C. With a popper,
its easy to thread it into the bean mass, but havent yet figured a good anchoring
technique for the bm. May try the probe for that.

Note that these will read in mV. To get a temp, I use a table that I found somewhere
on the web: look up mV reading for ambient temp*, add that to DMM reading, look
up temp in table. This is a right royal PITA to do quickly and often Of course
you quickly get a good feel for what the numbers mean, but its not the same as
direct readout.  (* do this once only of course)

One that gives a temp directly costs a bit more. Presso got one off e*bay for $60
IIRC. I contacted a seller in Sydney who had similar devices around $70 but I
didnt get it as Im still not sure of the accuracy of the readings.

                  Neither
It is actually a digital multimeter with a thermocouple probe (piece of ins wire with a bead on the end).... the multimeter also measures voltage, resistance etc

However the lead is rated (I think conservatively) at 260C.
The specs claim 1000 deg C (but that is the reading on the meter - Im sure the thermocouple would fail before that temp!! )

I know, I know just trying rather clumsily to distinguish the stiff type from the floppy type -- eg for
the former something that looks like this

                      http://www.pcwi.com.au/DisplayProduct.asp?ProdId=SurfaceTemperatureProbe0 796

cf "piece of ins wire with a bead on the end".

The K-type t/c itself is rated up to around 1200C, so I guess its the insulation that is rated at 260.

Excellent! I asked last time I was in Jaycar and they claimed to have nothing like that.
Ill return armed with this catalogue number ....

Yep, the limitation is the insulation on these thermocouples (most people want them to be flexible.... makes it easier to insert into the group by the way )

If you want to work at the top of their range, it would be a good idea to remove the insulation (being careful not to break the bead where the two wires are joined) and run then in ceramic tubes or similar (which is what they do with the professional ones) for the length they will be exposed to the extreme heat.... (makes em a bit less flexible :)

As long as the two wires only touch at the end where the temp is being measured ( the fused blob) and both wires run direct to the multimeter (no other joints of dissimilar metals) they would work fine up to the 1200 deg C.

The accuracy of the meter when measuring temp is +- 1.5% by the way.

Yes indeed - blinded by Bling.

There is a huge range of thermocouple probes available from various sources - some food industry tool suppliers have ones for hot environments - wires and all (fibreglass coating)

The ones supplied with the multimeter do infact have fibreglass insulation along the length of the cable....

The strange thing is they have a small piece of what looks like a silicon rubber sleeve near the "hot" junction (I presume to hold the end of the woven fibreglass in place)....

Whilst the cable could probably take >1200 deg C - I dont think the silicon rubber could withstand more than about 320 deg C....

Still should be high enough for coffee roasting

Thanks JavaB - I ordered a Thermocouple, new stopwatch and some other interesting bits and pieces from Jaycar.

There is a lot of stuff for the customised popper modder in the car section too - maybe some blue neons for under the base. . .
