    Re: Breville Crazy Popper

I found myself a chimney of sorts.

    Supercheap wasnt much chop.
There was one tailpipe extension that was the right diameter but so long I thought it might topple the popper.

So then I tried the plumbing section of the hardware store.

I couldnt find exactly what I wanted but I did find a stepped down piece of plastic pipe that fits exactly into the popper and reduces about 10mm at the other end.

10mm aint gonna make any difference I figure so Ill see how it goes.
Now Im tempted to do another batch.
Maybe I can hold out until I get to Vivianes and everyone can see how it goes.

      Re: Breville Crazy Popper

Let us know how the plastic goes - if it melts / warps at all.

The BIG problem with the poppers cutting out is when it happens, say before first crack, or before second crack. When mine do this, I buy a second one and transfer the roast batch REAL quick.

Sounds like I will have to try a few auto stores before I might find the right bling.

        .
        Thundergod....

The top of the popper can get quite hot..... some plastics can withstand that OK .... but Id be very carefull about PVC pipe.... it has a relatively low melting point!!!!

I heard of chocolate coated coffee beans - but PVC coated? ;D

          Re: Breville Crazy Popper

Welcome to the Crazy Popper Club Thundergod! We will be able to have races at Vivianes. Maybe a slow race would be appropriate though. I havent been able to go fancy with the chimney on mine yet just a can so far. I would like to get a Tail Pipe but havent been able to source one yet. If anyone knows a part number for a tailpipe that fits I would love to know. Maybe we can get Greg Pullman to produce some Crazy Popper accessories.
We are getting similar equipment lists together Thundergod, at least with brand names anyway. Pullman, Expobar and now Breville. We will be able to gang up on everyone at Vivianes as long as the couriers are nice to me with the delivery of my machine and grinder before the 4th.

The plastic at the top of the popper didnt seem to get that hot so Im thinking therell be no direct heat transfer.
That leaves how much tranfer there is from the hot air travelling up the chimney.
            Well see.

We wont need your equipment to gang up on them.
Im a black belt. If they start giving us trouble Ill handle it.

Then again we could always challenge them to Pullmans at 10 paces.

I like your style, I did make it to yellow belt one white tip! So maybe I better rely on the Pullman instead. Although they do seem like a nice bunch so I am sure we should be fine. But if trouble brews I am with you. Maybe with all that coffee there will be a few edgey people.

What JavaB said... The PVC will melt. I used PVC in my thermofilter and even at 90+ C (and 9 bar) it got quite soft and made for some amasing blowouts.

Other thing to watch with PVC even at only moderate temps is a gradual breakdown of the structure of the pipe and release of very nasty compounds.

                      Re: Breville Crazy Popper

Thundergod, PVC piping isnt food safe. Im a cook, and a place that I once worked used a very short length of PVC pipe to size and shape burger mince. The food inspector was seriously unimpressed even though the cold meat was only in contact with the pipe for less than a minute.

Hmmm, black belts and duelling Pullmans??? They shouldnt be necessary, only nice people are coming, and my Silvia and heatgun are prepared to be seriously upstaged.

                        Re: Breville Crazy Popper

PVC will outgass some very nasty chemicals when it gets hot. Personally I wouldnt let it anywhere near my roaster/beans.

Well nice to know you were all correct.

I should have read this thread again first.

Pipe started to melt just as I was about to stop the roast.
So at least the timing was good in that it didnt stop the roast.
Made it with seconds to spare.
                          Phew!

Now I need to open that can................  ;D

Ill probably only bring my new popper (minus its now melted chimney).
Dont forget to send me those directions Viviane.

Id be really leary of using those beans as the plastic was outgassing long before it started to melt. :-/

                              Point taken.

The first batch (pre-pipe) has turned out well.
See PNG Peaberry thread in Cupping Room.

Id also look at the popper very carefully after removing the pipe and if theres any sign of residue from the pipe make sure it is all removed before using it for roasting again. :-/
