      Re: Breville Crazy Popper

      Hi Everyone,

I received my starter pack yesterday and today Ive gone out to buy the Crazy Popper so I can get my first roast underway.

I have just taken the top and botton off a can and notice it has a white lining inside - does this matter? The can was for asparagus and I am also a little concerned that itll take forever for the asparagus smell to disappear. Maybe I should pick another can. I picked this one because it seemed to be the best fit without any other modifications.

      Any thoughts?

        Re: Breville Crazy Popper

How funny Vieve I bought an asparagus can for my crazy popper as well. Didnt even think about the white lining though so cant help you with that. I have only done one roast with mine so havent had issues with it. I didnt drink that batch anyway was just a test run to see the roast process.
If anyone is after a crazy popper or a spare one Dick Smiths at Macquarie Centre (Sydney siders) have one only at 30 dollars and is floor stock so you may actually be able to get it cheaper like marcstolk did for his floor model. If not I am sure someone will snap it up and use it for something stupid, like popcorn! Who would have thought?

          Re: Breville Crazy Popper

I may have to use my popper for popcorn now too. Actually I think it will be handy on nights when I have a few people over to roast - some of the newbies dont have gear yet, just beans, so two poppers and a corretto model G should cover a lot of roasting.

Shouldnt be a problem vieve..... The tall soup cans Ive used from time to time have had this coating too and as time has gone on, it just takes on oils from the beans and starts to slowly change to an ever darkening brown colour. Doesnt seem to wear off from the bean activity or burn from the heat of roasting either and as such Ive never worried about it.

Happy roasting ;D and be sure to let us know how you get on. All the best....

            Mal.

                Re: Breville Crazy Popper

Heres a piccy of my popper with its new chimney.

Now it just needs some flame decals and pinstriping.
Maybe some neon underbody lights too for when Im roasting at night.

So far Ive only done 100gm batches but read about others doing 180 and more.
Is it safe to go 200gms?

Depends on the temperature ... but last night (Rouse Hill, Sydney) I did a 140gm Decaf roast in 10 mins (beginning of rolling 2nd).... the temp outside was probably 20 deg...

The hotter the temp, the smaller the batch... unless you are doing it inside with Aircon operating :-)... But oh the mess youll have.. Actually, Decaf is a clean roasting beans so you could get away with Roasting inside..... Damn itll be nice to afford a Hottop.

                        Thanks guys.

Im actually looking forward to seeing the asparagus can version as I was having trouble finding the right sized can and then getting it to fit/stay.

Yeah I have found the can to be less than ldeal and plan to get a pipe of some description one of these days. Just need to get the time, and courage, to go to an exhaust shop with popper under my arm.

Well you will have to become a "Corretto" convert!

From as liitle as to want up to 700+ grams.... all at about 14 minutes total roast time..... and you just need a second hand bread machine, a 2000W heat gun (and ideally a datalogging multimeter) and you are away!!

Id put Belindas "Corretto" up against a commercial machine for roast quality any day.... and you will save the best part of $1000 as well

I have a BM on the way but not sure when its due as my daughter has sourced it from a friend.

                                Until then its the popper.

The popper is getting to 2nd crack at about 5 min.

Id rather a slower roast but obviously this popper has some grunt in the heat department.

Will a bigger batch (at a given ambient temp) be faster or slower?
