    Ah Simonty,

I think you will find we are all having that same fun in our own crazy popping heat gunning bread makering roasting labs  8-) There is nothing as great as tasting a delicious fresh home roast. I am a massive fan of the Mysore Nuggets too - yum. Good work and keep us all posted as the good times keep rolling...and cracking  ;D

indian mysore was a real treat.I am absolutely hooked on the home roasting..I cant go back, I wont!
seriously after day 3 I got the best crema and the loveliest, sweetest espresso i have ever had! And all from my modest little Sunbeam espresso machine!day 4 & 5 got better and better. It is fascinating to see the subtle changes from day to day. Really nice. I and fellow CS have roasted a few more types since and in the process of going through them now. Is any one else having more fun than me?

    Ahhh right,

One of the Super-Popper brigade ;D. These units certainly seem very capable indeed, will be interesting to hear how your roast times change as the weather gets progressively warmer and whether you need to reduce your batch sizes at all.... Youll have to keep us posted ,

    Hi simonty,

Welcome to CoffeeSnobs [smiley=thumbsup.gif] and hope you enjoy the experience ;D.

Regarding your roast.... I have never roasted the much avowed Mysore Nuggets as yet but on appearances, it would seem that most of your beans have not reached 2nd Crack yet, but appear very evenly roasted none-the-less. Dont know what most people have discovered with the Mysore but I guess one way to tell, is when they have rested for sufficient time (say 48 hours), try a couple of shots and see how it tastes. From Andys description here...
The Indian Mysore region produces what is generally agreed on as the best arabica coffee in India... the extra bold (EB) Nuggets. These have been harvested from a single plantation, screened to 18+ extra bold and hand graded to "A".
It would seem that you have something to really look forward to .

I guess if you find the coffee a little too bright for your tastes, you could try roasting a little longer, say to the start of Rolling 2nd Crack... see how that goes, if more body is required.... maybe take it to about 20 seconds into Rolling 2nd Crack. Its really very much a "suck it and see" kind of exercise until you find the roast level that produces what you enjoy in the cup. Just keep the batch sizes small until you find what youre looking for. Give it a go and see what happens ....

    Mal.
    P.S.
What popper do you use by the way?

    hi all,
had a go with the indian mysore nuggets from starter pack(2nd time roasting). 1st crack at 5.30 and 2nd(I think) at 9.30-pulled out of popper at 11.00. smells nice. a few "burntish" ones I think but otherwise fairly happy. any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Another first roast post

    HI all,

First posted this elsewhere but probably more relevant to this thread.

1st roast with fellow snob and twin breville crazy poppers fitted with car exhaust tips and a starter pack of green beans. Found we needed to push the amount of beans up to get a decent roast. First go of 100g of columbians whirled around for 20 minutes with no crack (think we just baked em).

After that we stepped up the amts by 50g at a time until we got to 250g. Need to stir for the first minute but after that they hopped around beautifully and gave a very even roast. Cracking sounded at about 4-5minutes and second crack at about 7:30-9:30 minutes with nice dark colour and no burning. We also found that using the collander to place over the exhuast tip for a 30 secs to a minute at a time seemed to pump the temp a bit and help sustain the cracking (previously it was one bean cracking at a time as though they werent just getting there).

Viva coffee snobs, viva crazy popper and praise to Matt King for his exhaust tip suggestion.

Once youve roasted enough to last you a few days- begin to allow a couple of days for the beans to develop in style and mellownisity!

Presso- if you want to run off some excess caffiene- get into heatgun roasting and do some stirring. ;D
Heatgun is my hobby horse at the moment.
I love it because of the control you can get and extend out the time of the roast so that 1st and 2nd crack become distinctive. :
MMMMM and the coffee is more mellow - or is that just me.

I was hoping to use th BBQ to avoid the noise. Heat guns and me are like hairdryers and Yul Brenner. Though now youve advised me directly Im duty bound to test the process, why is that?

I was not able to find mt rotisserie at a suitable price but I did see some stainless cutlery holders at a major retailer for $5 a pop, I figure a couple of rivets and some mesh and Ill be right!

    Hello Viviane

Also just started on popper roasting and have had similar questions.
Have found this a useful guide to help identify stages in the
    roast:
      http://www.sweetmarias.com/roasting-VisualGuideV2.html

We inadvertently found out just how far a roast can go on very first
attempt, in a fan forced electric oven. Preheated oven to 270C+.
Inserted tray, and watched beans go, in very short time,
from green to brown to insane crackling noises to smoke and then black
Did manage to refine the technique later.

Soon found a popper and have been using it since, and now
getting roast times around 9min30. Tilting the popper helps make it a
bit slower. Still experimenting, trying to learn ...

Welcome to the thread, guys - the more the merrier

Ive since roasted another batch, this time outside with the soup can chimney and 100g of beans.  First crack was at 2 mins 34, stopped at 4 mins 20.  I dont know whether i reached 2nd crack or not, the cracking still didnt stop once  1st crack started.  These beans werent as well done as the first batch though - they were a little lighter, and the first batch were a little oily, these definitely arent.  With drinking the 2nd batch though, I get a slight grassy taste, which seems to mean they arent done enough.

Im having problems with the speed of the process with the popcorn machine, especially since I really have no idea what Im supposed to finish with.  I bought a heat gun today to try slow the whole thing down a bit, so i can get a feel for whats happening.

Ill have another go in the morning, but whats the minimum size for a heat gun batch?  Im thinking that for now the more practice I get at this the better, but Im the only one in the house who drinks coffee, so I really only want to roast a few days worth at a time for now.

Congratulations on your baby, Topher - only 10 years or so before you can start bribing the little one to make you a coffee

I would recommend a lighter roast as well. Most Columbians are best pulled well before 2nd crack in my experience. They are the lightest roast I do, generally being pulled *well before 2nd crack is reached.

Java "Well and truely cracked" phile

Im going to hijack this thread as well, but as a fellow first time roaster i hope you dont mind. Ive just finished my first batch of home roasted panama beans (and loved them) from the starters pack and am going to roast again soon (had planned to get that done last week, but my wife has just given birth to a junior coffee snob, so roasting has taken a back seat). I am wondering about the Temperature monitoring presso, did you do it for interests sake, to see how hot they got, or did you try to controll the temp by turning the popper on and off. Wondering if anyone else has tried this? Maybe you could use some kind of power attenuator to controll the heater?

Oh and with the chimney, I used a big tomato juice tin from coles. Even longer than the soup tins, fits straight on top of popper, and has doubled my roast time. The bloody gaffa tape melted to the top of the popper though, it may not have been necsessary.
Ill trade you..... my thermocouple info for a pic of your chimney. ;D

I opened and closed the lid to lower the temp. The thermocouple from evilbay was touching the beans as they rolled past. I guestimated that the beans would have been cooler than the freshly licked surface so I "took off" about ten degrees.

My most recent batch, this evening was some colombian, the first crack came after less than 3 minutes, the second nearly seven minutes later. I stopped it straight away by rolling onto a collander that had been frozen in the chest freezer, I didnt use the thermo couple, just waited for the crack, shone a torch down the centre of the whirlpool of beans until I was happy with the colour.

My better half coffee snob suggested I try a lighter roast for the next batch(how diplomatic). Well see in the morning!!
