Re: Its the Cooler for you Herr Grendel - Phase I

All this profile work with a thermocouple takes me back to doing another type of profile - a Fraser Island Transect - bloody 80cm holes every 10 metres from one side of the island to the other -Dig hole, stick in thermocouple, write down measurement, proceed along surveyed line to next point.

    10 people, 2 days, 500000000 blisters.

I think from now on Ill stick to coffee.

first go at the graph - explanation and cracks tomorrow!

Right hand Y axis scale is all screwed up - ignore it!

Here is an updated graph with the cracks marked.

This roast with the brazilian beans ripped along fairly fast but had a good clear break between the cracks. I took some photos of the beans (dont have them here at work though) and it is one of the most even looking roasts I have done. Ive been working hard on getting that right.

Im also getting two poppers on the weekend that a friend no longer wants and a Bread Machine missing a few bits that I might be able to work into something useful - it is free so I cant complain!

Im certainly looking forward to trying Belindas innovation in coffee roasting.

Ok - so my work PC is crap for graphics, how can microsoft imagine that image editor is in any way adequate? - Ill photoshop the graph for a better resolution when I get home. . .

ya- that is ok at that size but try reducing the size and its pixellation city.

As you can see from that graph mark - my popper ran as fast as yours - seems to be doing that more now (just clocked up 45 batches on it) Ive got two second hand ones coming on the weekend.

I cant make my data look as sexy as Grendels but here goes...
                  First crack at 520 sec.
                  Secon crack at 800 sec
Once I got to 250 degrees I tried to keep it there, without success as you can see

Ahhhh the sexy data is all in the excel charting technique - girls love it. errr ok, maybe not - if you right click on the data series (pink line) you can format it however you like.

Very nice keeping it going that long. Im working on further ways to slow mine without prying open the popper.

The really good news is that on monday I am getting a Breville crazy popper in exchange for 500g of roasted beans, and a Bread machine (missing a pan and blade - but its a start) for free from a colleague at work.

                    Roasting bloody heaven!

Now, for my beans - these are the brazil beans - I like to use them for practice and experiements because they are regular in size and stable to roast.

Re: Its the Cooler for you Herr Grendel - Phase I

Right click on the series, OK that will happen next,
For now, here is the Decaf profile, Id like to have more temp control but it was a bit windy yesterday.
                      First crack at 520 Sec
                      Second at 800 sec.
It would be great to get some feedback about real "profiles", which temp is crucial etc. I know from my glass annealing you can save a considerable about of energy and time by heating/cooling within very narrow ranges if you know the composition of your stock.

Re: Its the Cooler for you Herr Grendel - Phase I

The batch came out fairly even, I still have distribution issues, my vanes have made it better but with something like the Mandheling, I get a real patchy batch.

My probe was threaded through the axis on the rotisserie

The probe didnt actually make contact with the beans, it is highlighted here by the red arrow.
Where did you stick your probe?

Instead of using my bling for the chimney I used my old golden circle can - that has a small gap between the body of the popper and the can - probe went right down there. Im thinking of drilling a hole in my bling as a permenant probe point.

                                Hi Guys,

Dont know if this will help you much, but Ive drawn a freehand sketch of a generic roast profile (not to scale) that roasters would normally try to aim for. As you can see, the general trend is for 1st Crack to be achieved relatively quickly and once that milestone is reached, the heat is backed off a mite and the roast allowed to kind of coast up towards 2nd Crack or where 2nd Crack would occur if the roast was allowed to go that long.

Not sure where Ive seen images of actual roast profiles but I guess if you do a search on google, some will turn up. Hope this is of some help,

                                Mal.
