Re: writing a coffee article, need your help

When I used to buy my coffee from Di Bella before I roasted, they always told me to keep the coffee in the fridge.

Never have since. And its never been better!

Although putting Roasted Coffee in the Fruit and Veg part of the fridge caused me to roll my eyes...
Yep, not the best advice that is for sure...... But it IS a commonly held belief that its a good idea (as is freezing beans / grounds)

      YUK!!

Not to defend all my brethren, but you try getting your head around a new subject ever day, trying to become an instant expert and learn as much as you can, interpret that knowledge, (often given verbally by people who might not be great at explaining things or be shy or not very forthcoming) then impart it in a way that can be understood by other people who also know nothing about the subject! And do it within a very small time frame with people breathing down your neck and a certain space to fill with not one word allowed to go over the limit.
The copy is checked by the journo, and a sub editor, but even then human error means that sometimes things are not picked up by either.

Yes, journalists get things wrong and as their mistakes are so public they get more shit about it than anyone else who might make a mistake at their work! Let those who never err feel free to cast stones. Sure we should all approach our work with the aim of being as precise and correct as possible, to not do so is reprehensible and slack but in the wider scheme of things its about getting info out there, of leading people to discover new and wonderful things, different ways to do things, and the people who may be able to teach them.

I see where youre coming from Xabitha and understand the problems you faced.

Being coffeesnobs we pick up on the little things of course.

Overall though I think you did a great job :-)

Certainly it has put our little hobby out there to a greater audience.

          Thankyou for that.

            Interesting comments Xabitha,

I have a point of view and it goes like this....

If you intend to write an article about people (which is what you did, did you not?), then it should be a wise thing for the people to proof read it also before publishing yeh??? How many times do we see articles in the general media that over exaggerate truth and lies time and time again and yet are not held accountable??? All in the name of free press??? What youre essentially saying is, if someone sees an error thats about THEM, they cant point it out???

By and Large you did a great job on the article. I enjoyed the read. Well done.

Xabitha dont take it the wrong way.

As Corretto said "coffeesnobs we pick up on the little things".

Im an auditor and have a "gift" for spotting "errors".
However I also understand how these things creep in.

I think you did an excellent job given the short amount of time you had to research, digest and impart the the information.

                Xabetha,

As others have said above - its a great article.

Coffee snobs have a real passion for what we do.... gained from lots of experience and knowledge sharing over the years. And by our nature we are perfectionists in this field.

I cant imagine how many "errors" Id make if I wrote an article about a day in the life of a journalist with a few interviews and a short lead time!

If you intend to right an article about people (which is what you did, did you not?), then it should be a wise thing for the people to proof read it also before publishing yeh???  How many times do we see articles in the general media that over exaggerate truth and lies time and time again and yet are not held accountable???  All in the name of free press??? Dont know if that was meant to be funny, but advising proofreading for any article they right - IS FUNNY

I used to have the signature
"Always proofread your replies to ensure you havent any words out"

Anyway, I liked the article. It was an article just like this a few years ago that got me into home roasting. Im sure it had a couple of things in it I would disagree with now.

On the whole, no-one died, so it aint that bad.

I am also interested in the spelling of xabitha and the write way to spell right. It all depends on where you are coming from & what is important to you. Also we can get a little defensive about something we are so passionate about.

Re: writing a coffee article, need your help

Proofreading your own work is almost a waste of time.
You are naturally blinded to your own mistakes.
I just noticed a spelling mistake in my post above.

I think marcstolk was saying that those being written about should proofread the article.
I understand she didnt have the luxury of time to do that.

I dont like the idea of sharing our knowledge at all!

                        I like being special.

I mean if everybody ends up producing good coffee, then its harder to be snob. Increased green bean demand will push up prices, crazy poppers will always be out of stock and good luck picking up a secondhand BM!. It will be a world of woe.  ;D

I concur with my fellow snobs - a great article for your first time into our world. I dont mind evangelizing people into good coffee drinking and home roasting if that delivers better coffee to all and reduces prices on equipment through volume sales.

Coffee is one of the truly egalitarian drinks of our time in terms of its reach and in poorer parts of the world home roasting is the only way to get coffee. Quite bizarrely, it may be people in the developing world are drinking better coffee than people in the developed world.
