2 cups of green coffee goes in. I use a bar clamp to attach the drill to one of the upright members of my deck - about 15 degrees above vertical. I use a little piece of wire to hold the trigger of the drill by twisting it just tight enough to start the drill spinning at slow speed. I then clamp my heatgun to a patio chair, pointed into the drum... after about 15 minutes (or when the kids run in to tell me how much smoke is rolling out) I have a nice batch of coffee! Ill try to post some pics of that setup...now that I know how to post pics :-[
Id like to move up to a breadmaker because it would be less set-up and tear-down. I do like this set up, though. If I can get the breadmaker motor running, I may use the breadmaker housing to modify a similar drum style...self contained?
The main inside piece, the heavy mesh, is a pen/pencil holder from Target. The rest is a tin can and some leftover sheet metal, rivets, aluminum foil and screen (to hold hold the aluminum foil down) to kind of insulate it to keep down the hot-to-touch factor.
You might be able to make a more or less permanent setup based on what youve already got there mate.... You could use a 2nd-Hand W/Screen Wiper Motor to rotate the drum, powered from an old spare computer PSU and then rig up a pretty simple stand or buy a cheap drill stand, etc to mount the Heatgun on..... lots of possibilities I reckon .
Anyway, getting back to your BM/HG or Corretto as they have become known down our way (after the nickname of the very clever CS member who came up with the concept 8-)). After looking at the photos and your desire to do away with the original control panel, I believe it would be a fairly simple matter to remove the motor capacitor from the PCB, add a couple leads to it (probably just solder them on) then reconfigure the whole shebang to operate from a simple Double Pole-Single Throw switch to Start and Stop the Stirrer Motor.
You would need to identify prior to removing the Capacitor, which Motor Lead this is connected to as this will be the Starting Winding connection of the motor and will require to be reconnected appropriately downstream of the switch.
Anyway Chad, if you like I can walk you through this process via Private Message to save drawing this thread out with interminable posts of a technical nature. Let me know and well take it from there ,
Having just acquired a BM [many thanks Dailybean] Im in a similar boat [ie want to direct control motor via DPDT.]
From the above posts Im still a little confused.
So an Elec Eng 101 question...........
Does the motor require the capacitor?
Is the Cap wired in series or parallel to the motor windings?
Another "corretto" question.
Has anyone tried using the BMs heating element instead of or in addition to the HG?
It would be possible to direct control this element and perhaps even regulate its temperature.
I assume the HG is preferred because it gives better coverage and control.......any comments or is this a dumb question?
The motor DOES require the capacitor..... it generates the rotating magnetic field (which causes the motor to rotate :).
The capacitor is in series with the start winding..... on some motors that is a special (lower wattage) winding, on others the two windings are identical. It must be connected to the correct winding! If incorrect the motor will either rotate the wrong way (least case problem) or could burn out (bigger problem!!)
The heater in the BM is relatively low wattage.... and with a big air space between it and the bowl- will transfer relatively little heat- not sufficient to roast adequately, certainly not if the lid is left off the BM as most heat will escape. Put the lid on and you will trap the smoke (assuming the Corretto does get hot enough) and have smokey flavoured beans. You also wont get a very good view of the roasting beans and it will be harder to hear the cracks.
The element in a BM is similar to that in an electric stove in that it is designed to heat a confined space..... stoves dont heat very well with the door left open.
You could have it on in addition to the HG.... but this will require the lid being off..... and so wont be very effective.
THIS POST ONLY REFERENCES MY PARTICULAR MOTOR. IT WILL LIKELY BE DIFFERENT FOR YOURS.
So, anyway, heres what I did:
1) On my motor, there are 3 leads. Black, White, and Red.
2) Since on the back of the motor is printed "10MFD" I assumed the 10uF capacitor on the board was the starting capacitor.
3) Soooo, the AC hot lead in goes to one side of the starting capacitor AND to the Red lead.
4) The other side of the capacitor goes to the White lead.
5) The AC neutral goes to the black lead.
6) The On/Off switch is now the cord
I know the capacitor goes from the Red to the White because thats the ONLY thing the White lead is connected to, so that was easy. Also I could see from the board that one side of AC was wired directly to the Red lead. And since I mastered multiple choice questions in high school, the other side of the AC must go to the black lead. Since its alternating current, and theres no ground on this machine, the Hot and Neutral could be connected backwards and itd be fine. (Just like you can turn the plug over on the vacuum cleaner and itll work fine.)
Much thanks to Mal and the other posts here at CS! I just need to clarify my thinking before I created my new fire hazard.

The other benefit of the HG is that it blows the chaff out of the bowl. Ive tried directing a gas flame from a torch straight into the bowl with limited success. Lots of chaff was always left in the bowl and the beauty of the HG was made clear
Doesnt it figure... I just get the BM running and Im out of green coffee > > >
Ill post some pics and maybe a video soon.
If anyone is interested, I posted a large 12Mb video of the cordless drill drum roaster that you should be able to access AT THIS LINK. Once you get to the link, click on the little paper icon under "Email File."
