Tip for you, mount a magnet in your grinder hopper. Ive seen magnets hung with string from the hopper lid. It will not catch stones but the metal surprises are the real worry.
Yep, agree with you there Jason.... Even though grinder burrs are made from tool steel, they are not really intended to be used as metal turning tools and will suffer badly from contact with any iron or steel fragments hiding in amongst the beans. The use of a suspended magnet is a good idea,

    Mal.

      For sure.
The big climax grinder I have has a magnet in the neck of the hopper (came with it) and rare earth magnets are cheap and easy to find these days so I use them everywhere I can.

You are an IT guy Marc...
Grab a dead hard drive, pull it to bits and grab the magnets out of it. Older drives have a couple, most newer ones will have one only.

They are excellent for this sort of job.

Checking during a transfer from roaster to cooler makes sense, then you should never see anything magnetic anywhere near your grinder hopper.

I dont know about other brands but the big Mazzer commercial grinders came standard with a magnet rig for the hopper 20 years ago. Its a piece of alum rod shaped into 3/4s of a circle and a magnet with a hole in it slides on. In position the magnet hangs just above the neck of the hopper.

                  Re: Stone me!

I keep having visions of me hanging a magnet in the hopper and it falling off and hitting the burrs while they are in full flight!

I think Ill opt for moving a magnet through the colander I use to cool roasted beans instead - keep the evil cryptonite further away from doing harm.

Yeah, thats all I do Dennis.... Use a NIB magnet from an old HDD as Andy refers to above. Only found one metallic "thingy" so far over the last few years, but thats enough even if I dont find any more for the next few years. I have absolutely no idea what it was..... kind of looked like the rusted head of an old three inch nail. Definitely better found before grinding than after though,

                    Mal.

This evening I roasted 250gm of the yemen and as a consequence, have decided a shovel might be better than a magnet...the bit at the very back is a coffee bean. You can guess what the rest are!

I too had some stones in my bag and these would have definately killed the grinder. I have taken a photo of me removing them from the bench top.

                          ;D
