  • Sunbeam Cornelius Popper

Hi Im a newbie here and just bought a sunbeam cornelius. After reading a few posts it seems rather mandatory to put in a chimney? If I just roast very small batches I wont have to modify it?

Also, does anyone have any tips for roasting in hot and humid weather - 30 degrees celcius and high humidity? - yep im on the island on the equator.

    Re: Sunbeam Cornelius Popper

Gday Amberosw and welcome to CoffeeSnobs.
Id personally reccomend the use of the chimney on your popper, as it has two benefits:
1- to stop the beans from flying out the top of the popper when doing a roast, even small roast sizes suffer from this problem occassionally, and
2- to increase the roasting time. The chimney assists with increasing airflow through the popper slightly, Im not sure of the technical aspects of how though.

In relation to roasting in hot & humid weather, your options are a bit limited with a popper.
I used to live in a place that regularly had temps of 40+ degrees :P, so early morning roasting was the go. I dont think that high humidity will play a great part in roast times.
Otherwise, the only way to lengthen your roast times is to cool the air entering the popper.
Some of the methods employed that Ive seen are:
    - putting a popper on top of a milk crate, or similar, with a fan underneath which forces more air towards the bottom of the popper,
    - having a fan blowing across some ice towards the popper, which reduces the air temp entering the popper.
Thats about all Ive got for now. I apologise if Im rambling a bit, Im a bit doughey. Its nearly 5am here, and I dont really know why Im not in bed :-?.
Good luck with it, and welcome again.

Thats fine if you want to roast indoors, but be prepared for your unit to be filled with some smoke and the strong smell of roasted beans. Your smoke alarm will sound too, scaring the neighbours. Also you will have chaff flying everywhere (unless you have rigged up a chaff catcher).

        Really, outdoors is best.

can someone explain properly (Im kinda daff ) why having a chimney will help cool down the popper? does it mean the higher my chimney, the slower the roast will go?

sometimes i roast, then switch off. stir. then switch the popper back on again. stir. turn on.. is it ok to do this?

            amberosw....

One of the enemies of a good roast.... in a popper, corretto or even commercial drum roaster is the beans being stuck at the same temperature... even worse is if they are allowed to drop in temperature and are then heated again......

Especially between first and second cracks, complex changes are being made to the sugars in the beans....and if the temperature stalls or falls during this process the flavour is adversely affected....

So if you are talking about 1 sec on then a sec off.... that is probably just OK (temperature wont fall much).... but if you are turning off for quite a while.... nope.... not a good idea....

The chimney helps draw hot air out of the popper (just like on a wood fire)... more air flowing through the popper....less heat transferred from the element per unit volume of air..... lower temperature... longer roast!

You can also force feed (cool) air into the base of the popper to increase air flow and reduce the temperature.

thanks JavaB.. so will making my chimney taller help to cool down the popper more? is there an optimal height for the chimney? I know most use a can. but Im just wondering if anyone experimented
