Re: What is the normal size of your corretto roast

I normally roast 400 grams also.... but have done as much as 700 grams and as little as 250 grams (but that was a "one off")...

I also find that larger batches are perfectly even.... and with the rate I go through coffee (I was going to say "burn through" but that has other connotations ) it is just as well.

My minimum is about 320gms and I do up to about 400gms.
I know I could happily do much more but I dont need that much.

Re: What is the normal size of your corretto roast

I was just thinking the other day about this very topic! I have a decent sized Breville "Bakers Oven" (Squareish tin).

My usual roast at the moment is about the 600g size... BUT just then I tried a 840g roast (this gives me exactly 700g roasted.. 500g bag + 200g bag... or 3 roasts gives 2kg ish

I think this size was pushing it a bit for the BM and the HG i have. (Time for an upgrade!!)

My problem before was my cooling machine... it couldnt really fit more than about 400g of roasted beans. NOW I have a monster that i constructed tonight! I made it out of a piece of ducting/woodheater flue, sealed one end, installed a sieve in the middle of the tube and a handle on the side, cut a tidy whole in the bottom for vacuum hose and fashioned a lid with a hole in to let the air through and create a well in the beans. Works a treat! Cooled v quickly and i could probably do 1kg++ really easily.

Ill stick some piccies up on here once i take a couple!

But back to the topic - 840g in my machine didnt seem to have the beans moving around as much... especially once they grew in size a bit. I was stirring it a little to be sure (didnt want to waste that much!). seemed to go into 1st crack at an earlier temp than usual for fc and sc. Still a nice even roast though - and it never threatened to spill over the side!

Re: What is the normal size of your corretto roast

I normally roast 500g at a time because
          (1) That gives me 5 roasts per 2.5kg bag that I get from beanbay,
          (2) that many beans just about fills my bean cooler device I made,
          (3) 2 roasts at 500g and I have enough coffee for a couple of weeks.
Now I do roasts for a couple of friends so I have been roasting a bit more lately.

I always average around 300g as once reduced it is about 250g so it fits into a 250g coffee zip bag with value ready for degassing.

I then print a label on it so I remember what is in the bag.

Same here or sometimes 600g to finish with 2 x 250g batches.

I used to do smaller batches until I got my confidence up, I didnt want to destroy too many beans learning the ropes, luckily Ive only had 2 batches early days that were totally unpalatable and went into the bin.
