Thanks all, thats cleared everything up!

The paddle on my BM goes all the way to the edge & thats where I was getting confused :-?

With the probe positioned as in my previous post, with 300gm (see photo) the probe is just under the bean mass.

Of course as the beans expand toward the end of the roast the probe is well under the beans, which I think gives consistent results.

A 500gm roast gives a little more cover, but the result is very similar.

BTW I am using a square bread pan, so a rectangular pan will need a different approach, depending on bean volume of course.

I have about 6 different holes drilled in the side of my BM to allow for different roast weights/heights.

I prefer the TC to be about 1 - 2 cm below the top level of the roast (when the beans have expanded near FC)

    Nice work Gazz,

Ill get my DMM on the weekend and so will work something out.

Im still aiming to mount it from underneath, but having looked more closely I can see the challanges.

I have the probe about 10mm up and 10mm from the side of the bin, have shortened the paddle by 7mm.

Probe goes through a large snug fitting grommet in the outer casing, this stops it vibrating out.

Probe goes through a collett (bush) in the roast bin this allows movement without chafing the probe, also the probe is quickly removed when roast is finished.

    Hope this helps

Yes reubster, your assumptions are correct. Got my DMM/TC a couple of weeks ago and on first use pulled the pan up without removing the probe and put a bend in it. Got it right the second time but not the third. My probe goes through the front of the BM and protrudes about 10 mm into the pan and probably about 10 mm from the bottom. I used a 1/8" drill bit but that was just a tad too big. I use a bit of blu-tak to keep the probe still otherwise the vibrations from the BM work the probe into the pan and the paddle begins to hit it.

gday back to you Secksy ...

I dont have personal pics, but suffice to that say my Ronson BM paddle agitates itself within a 10mm radius, within a 25mm sphere in the tin.

So, my DMM, being about 2inch long, having 15mm to work with, is inserted via drill-hole approx 5-10mm above base of tin to give me plenty of accurate tip sensor required readings, due to its immersion within the greenies.

The rotational diameter of the paddle in a BM leaves plenty of room within the tin for a (calculated) probe insertion ...

    GDay

Does anyone have any pics of the probe inserted into the BM?  Since the paddle is where the beans are & the beans are where the probe needs to be, I thought the probe would be hit as the paddle rotated?
Am I on the right track, or do I have it very wrong?

    Thanks Mal,

Thats a good idea, many thanks for the link.
I have a friend, an old school fitter & turner who makes brass light fittings and he may have something similar,.

Otherwise, Ill do an Andy and apply some GBF
    [Gentle Brute Force]

    Gday reubster (a.k.a. Bender ;D),

Just had a thought about this, you can get very small Tube Benders right down to about 3mm (smallest Ive seen) mostly used on copper, brass and steel tubing once used by Fuel Injection Techs and Instrument Makers. If you can find someone who still uses em you might be able to take the probe with you and have it bent properly with very little likelihood of damage to the innards. Might be worth chasing up ?

    Mal.

    P.S.
This is the sort of thing Im talking about, although you may be able to get miniature bending springs too but I havent come across them.

    Thanks Andy + others,

Its good to know its "bendable"

Ive yet to buy the DMM+Probe [next BB], but I ll have a good sniff around the BM on the wend [when I roast up my first batch of Barahona AAA] to suss out the under-bowl mounting issues.

    Hang-on... ignore all the above.

Hey reubster, its fine to bend the probe at right angles.

Yeah, let me know if it survives..... cause Ive thought of doing that as well ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not too sure how you would go putting a right angle bend in the probe... I briefly looked at doing that for the big roaster and the probe felt like it had epoxy (or similar brittle material) inside it. It might have just been the ceramic of the actual sensor that I could "feel".

Anyway, I thought that it wasnt worth killing the probe so mine is still straight, maybe someone else will confirm it on theirs.

Youd be surprised. A lot of the chaff gets sloughed off during agitation and will undoubtedly make its exit through the slot.

My pot has a slot about 3cm up the side from the bottom. Its my main way of chaff removal, because the top is fully enclosed. The slot is about 3mm wide (about the size of the TC). It removes a good 85-90% of the chaff.

Youd probably be better off having a hole in the corner of the pan diagonally.

Careful with that idea Mal. Chaff will find its way through that slot, and muck up whats underneath. A slot is what I use to remove chaff with my TO roaster.
Even when its well below the top of the bean mass nunu? I must admit I havent poked my nose into any other makes of BM, so only know the one we have and in our case there is nothing below the pan that would be "mucked up" at all.... Its all fully enclosed.

    Mal.
