  • Yemin Bani Ishmail - interesting chaffy bean

    Hi all,

First roast of this - and a first for me using the EMM in the corretto.

I only did 400grams - normally I do 600 or so. Normally at the bigger amounts my time is 20 mins from start to finish. This time I used the thermocouple and with a relatively small amount I got to first cracks at 6 mins! I then turned the heat down for the slowest ramp up to second I could get, yet it still only took 14.5 mins to second crack commencing (with isnt too bad I guess given how quick the first crack was) and I pulled the roast after about 1 min into the second cracks. What I couldnt get over was the insane amount of chaff (fine stuff too) that was left in the mix. Most beans allow the chaff to almost all go out the top of the BM with the fan of the heat gun...

    Cant wait to try it.

    Cheers

Cant wait to hear how it tastes - 1 minute into 2nd crack...be careful...Ive heard that charcoal can be carcinogenic :P

Oh, and the fine stuff was not chaff - its ash ;D ;D ;D

Yep.... 1 minute into second crack is cremation......

In memory of the dearly departed beans.... they were still young, too young to die such a death.

They look alright....one min into it in the sense that thats after the first spasmodic couple of second cracks...not one min after the rolling second has commenced. It was only just getting the first hint of smoke.

        Cheers

I have just Corretto roasted my first batch of this beautiful, ugly bean .

Took it easy - 500 gm - 12 min to FC, 18 min to SC, then stopped. Finished with 400 gm (20% loss). About CS 9 - a bit inconsistent.

Very chaffy! And BEWARE - stones! 2 large and one little.

Now to rest it for a week (if I can control myself for that long :-/).

              Greg

Stones are on left of picture (and sorry about the size of attachment, Mal :-/ wont do it again).

                Those big ones are huge.

I got about a dozen stones out of my 2.5kg from the November BeanBay.

Now I wont have to look again as I roast.

I reckon youd do well to fix a magnet to the hopper of your grinder to catch the metal bits your eyes may have missed.

I did a very thorough search through the lot.
                      Almost bean by bean.

Maybe the Macap and Gino Rossi wouldnt notice a small rock.
                      Didnt find any metal bits.

                        Excellent advice nunu,

Got into the habit of doing this a long time ago after I found what looked like a rusty nail-head in a batch of M.A.O. Horse.... Dont think my Rocky would have appreciated that very much

                            Old thread TG :-?

All I have found so far from the last lot is some sand and a bit of dust in the pre and post sieving. For those with Hottops or Genes watch the chaff build up, this one makes heaps
