Nice find.  Does it fit over the probe ok?  If so, we might look at having some of it in BeanBay with the next lot of DMMs.
The fibreglass sleeving fits over the flexible wire thermocouple that comes with the DMM QM-1462 - no chunky probe. I just trimmed a couple of inches off the end and it covers it from DMM to tip. I know Cremakid used Vidaflex sleeving to wrap over his black-and-yellow probe http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1213936491/12#12.

Deja vu? I just know this idea has come up before; dont remember where, but I think the short answer is "not at all". The reason being, all youll measure is the temp of the roast chamber casing, whatever that is.

Now if we could get a bean-sized device in the roast chamber with the beans, that measures temp *and* reports its back to your datalogger *and* works at 200 deg. plus, now that would be something 8-)

Hey, has anyone tried infrared non contact temperature measurement? how effective is it?
Yes mate, been tried by several members over time..... If you do a search on "infrared thermometer" Im pretty sure youll locate previous discussions about them,

    Cheers,

Just this past week I purchased a Digitech QM-1462 which is the replacement for the model used earlier (at least, thats what Jaycar told me.) $99.95 RRP. Comes with USB cable and flexible thermocouple already in the box.
Your local Jaycar sales dude is "winging it". The QM-1462 is also a discontinued model.

I spoke with Jaycar management a couple of weeks ago and they tell me that the QM-1538 and the QM-1492 are end of range and they are waiting on a replacement.

were in between ranges of DMMs at the moment
    and
Hopefully we will see some more new meters come in the range in the next couple of months. Ill let you know what comes up

1m pack of 3mm fibreglass sleeving by Vidaflex to protect the thermocouple from the heatgun! (or popper). Less than $5. Code WS5504.
Nice find. Does it fit over the probe ok? If so, we might look at having some of it in BeanBay with the next lot of DMMs.

The DMM software works (once you get past the bad English in the instructions and figure out that the "RS-232" button is actually the yellow one marked "USB"),
The software interface "documentation" was even harder to understand as it was a cryptic table that had errors in it!

and merges seamlessly with the RoastMonitor software.
Great news, Im not keen on having too many versions of the software.

The only meter that Jaycar could offer me was the QM-1292 which is a $300 meter and the display looks different to the QM-1538 and QM-1462 so it might not even work with our profile software.

With anyluck Jaycar get replacement meters at a similar price to the previous ones soon.

I found reading the side of a milk carton more helpful than that instruction manual included with the QM-1462. Its a top DMM for use with the Corretto.... well worth the extra bikkies IMO.

That Vidaflex looks a bargain rated at 450C.
I bought something similar last year online but its only rated to 250C IIRC.

Just a little more expensive than what I was hoping but works great!

Quick question re: the "official CS thermocouple"... when would we be looking at having more available? I would prefer to use this one (along with the software) but would like to get started with my roasting soon. Any ideas when I could get my hands on one? Cheers!
    Gday Con,

I would say that since they are still not being listed in BeanBay or on Jaycars own website for that matter, there might be a problem finding a similar replacement; as per Andys post here... http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1209192311/20#21

There are alternatives around that purport to be able to use the QM1538 software and therefore the CS Roasting S/ware but the units Ive been able to find are all more expensive than the QM1538. If you cant wait and absolutely need one now, then a web search with the keywords QM1538 and DMM will locate some equivalent units for you but they are dearer to buy.....

    Cheers ,
    Mal.
