What were the 3 machines and 2 grinders?
Espresso machines...
Sunbeam EM6910: Fell to bits and Sunbeam told me i had no idea what i was doing with it... never buying any sunbeam crap again!
Gaggia Evolution: An interim machine to get me by after the SB.. bad heat problems though
Brasillia Portafino: Most terrible purchase ever from a feebay seller from melbourne who "specialises" in commercial equipment... its boiler split in under 48 hours and he refused to come to an agreement to do anything about it. Even after i had sent it back(as per paypal rules) he scribbled on the receipt of delivery document and said he never received it.
Grinders...
Sunbeam EM480: Free on redemption with the 6910..took 13 weeks to arrive and wasnt callibrated... better than no grinder at all though.
Nouva Simonelli MDXA commercial grinder: Great grinder! Just a little bit too big for my kitchen.
Now armed with the Dalla Corte and Vario combo i have just one more upgrade to go in regards to the espresso machine...if that goes ahead then ill probably be looking for another grinder.....
AN interesting path and and time frame....
I would suggest if, many looked back and documented they process... It would make interesting reading :0
Mine started with beans ground/smasshed up and dumpen in a billy in the outback... Then progressed to instant for many years.....
From there it has been a fast learning curve over the last 10 / 15 years from plunders and stove tops (itilian style) to where I am today... Still a nube ;D

Well its been 12 months since my original post... i packed away the 2 poppers in preperation of my new Hottop but i never bought one?!?!?! lol
I have been through 3 espresso machines and 2 grinders though.
Im going for what i hope to be the end all of upgrades though. A Dalla Corte Mini and Grind on demand Dalla corte digital grinder
Next on my list is the hottop... im getting sick of seeing all my green coffee in my cupboard seemly just aging for no apparent reason
It desperately needs roasting and drinking
Hi Luke
Looks like you are facing the exact decision I had to ponder a couple of months ago. I read lots of info about both machines including the one mentioned by Robin above. In the end I went with the Hottop B mainly due to the noise issue associated with the Cafe-Gene but also due to the interaction during the roast. Having used the Hottop for a couple of months now, Im convinced I chose the right machine. All of my roasts are completed by me based around the 2nd crack so I dont know how I would go if I couldnt easily hear it. It is easy to use and I was looked after by the good folk at http://www.thingscoffee.com.au (Pullman Tampers)
By the way, I admire your perseverance with the Crazy Popper; I only lasted 2 months before I wanted something bigger! ;D
Good luck with your decision.
They both have their pluses and minuses.... But personally I prefer the Hottop. Both are available from us at www.thingscoffee.com.au and the Gene is available from other site sponsors as well. We have both in stock.
The units sold here in Australia are to full Australian specification.... which cant be guaranteed if you purchase one overseas (often much cheaper..... but that is the 110V model.....) and you wont get the warranty and backup you will get if purchased locally.
Hello everyone, Im new to this site so please excuse me if this has already been covered in another post.
I have been roasting for a year now using a popcorn popper, initially i used a Breville Crazy popper but when it started loosing heat i picked up a couple of second hand poppers from a charity store(Tiffany, Black and Decker). Im having a lot of difficulty with these 2 new poppers roasting WAY too quickly and therefore not developing any body and sometimes going from 1st crack to 2nd crack in under a minute.
So heres the deal, my employer heard about my roasting problems and has offered to purchase me a perpose built roaster for home(how nice eh?). So the question is this..... Hot Top programable or Gene Cafe? have i missed any other brands? im not really interested in the iroast or the hearthware as they wont keep up with my coffee demands and if someone else is paying i may as well get something worthwhile right?
What are the pros and cons of these machines? do either require frequent filter changes or replacing of any parts? and out of these 2 machines, wich are available in an Australian power output? and to whome do i contact in regards to purchasing?
Thanks heaps for reading through my intire rambling post,
Luke
