  • First Test Roast

Hi I ran a test roast with my starter pack. I intended to let them go right through each stage and burn them to get an idea but pulled them earlier than anticipated. First signs of crack started around 3:37 and kept cracking along the way and than from 6:20 a lot of cracks (fast paced) with smoke thickening. I pulled them at 6:34 and the picture below is the result. I think they look like a full city plus? There is a bit of colour variance amongst the beans which I put down to the fact I did a mixed roast from starter pack so that I didnt waste too many of one particular bean as I wanted to do the entire 150 gram roast. I struggled to tell when first crack really stopped as it seemed to go into what I assumed was second crack. ANy advice would be appreciated. I thought I may even keep them for when my machien arrives so I can dial in the grinder a little and not waste too many beans. But if this is not really the ideal way to go about it I will stop being such a tight you know what and put some good ones through. If they arent too burnt I would be interedted to see what they taste like although I am sure the mixed blend wouldnt be too good.

    Hey Brett,

Did you roast outside ? what was the temp??? In the crazy popper the 1st crack (using 150g of greens) happens at approx 3:30-4:00 and continues through to 5:30... then youll have the odd crack from time to time but youll know when 2nd hits as the 2nd crack is a distinct crackle... not a crack per say....

I normally pull a roast out between 7:30 - 8:00 mins... Winter, probably longer... I did some Columbian last night and I pulled them at 7:20... just at the first signs of 2nd crack... very early signs of 2nd... no longer... Columbians are like that though...

      Re: First Test Roast

I actually did it inside this time with the plan to normally do it outside. Wasnt really worried about times on this occassion more that I wanted to observe the roast cycle. Am looking forward to the upcoming Sydney/NSW day to observe others roasts and play with mine there.
Thanks for your times guide that is very helful indeed.

Yeah amateur mistake and my wife wasnt exactly pleased. Didnt go too far though as the fan I had going managed to push it one direction so clean up was okay. But wouldnt recommend it to anyone all the same. I live on a college campus so to did it outside requires a bit of effort and when I do a normal roasting session it will be worht that effort.

              Re: First Test Roast

Not to bad for a new roaster! Your second test roast will be much much better. I know you have a crazi popper, but If you want a clean job, and a superb roast " a liitle noisy " get a iROAST
Setting 7 minutes roast, then will cool for 4 minutes, Temperature setting 180.
Ha! Did you know! About Colombian Coffee "Narino"
The average elevation for Narino coffee is between 1500 and 2100 m. Known as one of more remote coffee growing regions in Colombia. Production only 300.00 bags of coffee every years.

                Re: First Test Roast

                hi guys,

i had my first roast tonight. thought id wait till the weekend but my newly acquired bling popper was sitting there looking sad. http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1162458612

i did my roast with a bag of green beans i got from this african grocery shop in melbourne. there were no labels or info about the beans, although the lady said they were ethiopian. :-?

anyways. i did them in 2 batches.

                1st batch: 150g
                - first crack ~2 mins
                - second crack ~4 mins
                - stopped at under 5 mins

                2nd batch: 100g
                - first crack ~2mins
                - second crack ~3mins
                - i let it crackle and move around...
                - stopped at ~5 mins

the 1st batch was a bit uneven. not sure if im supposed to stir it but initially the beans werent really moving around the popper. 2nd batch was stirred a bit more but left to roast. i noticed a lot of oils were on the surface of the beans. some were clinging on to the colander and popper. i wanted to go longer but was scared of burning the verandah down. anyways, you can see the contrast in the attached pic (left=1st batch, right=2nd batch).

what kind of roast would you say they would be? not sure how theyll taste. hmm.

                  Re: First Test Roast

Working off Sweet Marias pictorial guide I would say the pic on the right would be "immanent fire"
At least you will get to experiment with two different roasts so you can work out what you will like.

                    Re: First Test Roast

The left one looks like a bunch of different origins, FC - FC+

The one on the right is Italian+/Spanish roast. You obviously cooked out the inconsistency in the beans.

                      Dailybean

                      Your raw coffee, its OK

Your popper cannot exceed 80 grams of raw coffee

Remove the top lead as your roaster is much to hot :-/

If your coffee doesnt move take the popper and move it clockwise for a short time. The beans must turning with the air flow. :

                      Dont roast to dark

If you want, send me the photo from your next roast

                      Cheers

                        hi all,

yeah, imminent fire was gonna occur. lots of smoke coming out :S

serge, what do you mean to "remove the top lead"? i like your tips. will try to move the beans more and avoid the roasting too dark. it was just a try.

must admit, roasting is really fun

Your left batch looks like an Eth Harar... this bean roasts uneven... but your roast times are very short....

I have the crazy popper and I roasted a 150g batch of Bali for 9mins last night.... have you got the popper suspended so that maximum airflow is being sucked through?

Have a look at how Im doing it..

                          http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1158042241/78#78

The crazy popper has an interesting way of sucking the air from the bottom. On warmer days, I put Ice in the container... yes, it helps!!

                            Hi Dailybean

If your poppers got a cover on top, you need to take it off. :-/
The air needs to pass through the beans. Use a can as an exhaust or nothing its better.  :You will be able to roast with your keen eye to pick the "robe de moine" the end point of roasting where the coffee are the colour of a French priests clothing.

Serge, dailybean has a mistral with a chimney (no cover).

I too would like to know what you meant by "remove the top lead".
Did you mean "lid" or do you have some secret to share about the wiring that Id love to know about?
