I wouldnt be worried about the grammar error. English is my only language and I make worse grammatical errors than that.
Why do you say that a popper can only do 80 grams at a time?

Most poppers can only handle around that amount of weight, otherwise the bean mass is too heavy for the fan to lift, which can lead to uneven roasts or thermal shutdowns.
It seems that a lot of fans in poppers these days are decidely weaker than previous models.
Maybe the word is getting back to the manufacturers about us

          Re: First Test Roast

I just thought there may have been another reason as I know my crazy popper can handle moving 150 grams with the can in place.

yups, my popper is the mistral. lid is not attached (thankfully).

when i did the first batch (150g), i noticed that the beans werent moving very much. could be that it needed to be persuaded with a long chopstick from the start and at regular intervals. or could be as lovey mentioned, slightly weaker fan. however, once there were crackling, the beans started moving better on its own.

marc, will try your tip about suspending the popper over something to allow for better airflow.

mm... now to try out the beans. should be about ready...

p.s. are you a frenchman serge?

                Re: First Test Roast

You can either use a chopstick, or just shake it for the first minute.

I dont even bother anymore, the fan does a decent job of moving the beans around. Dont have a problem with uneven roasts.

Serge is indeed French, Ive had the pleasure of meeting him back when he had his shop in Pymble. Very nice bloke, bit sad to see him head way up north.

                  Re: First Test Roast

I have a pair of long (cooking) chopsticks handy but my Crazy Popper can handle 100 gms without the need for a kick start.

Theyll be close to hand though when I try a bigger batch (just in case).

                    Re: First Test Roast

Thank you guys for your comments,

I like the chopstick idea, you need to help the raw coffee moving .As you know a static bean will burn! So, aller aller la mamba, you need to dance with the beans

                    Yes, oui oui, Im French

See you in Pymble the 15 Feb 2007 at 10 am for a special coffee course, bring your poppers

                    Cheers

                    Serge

                      Re: First Test Roast

just an update on the beans after letting it degas. all i can say is... "WOW". it tastes sooo much nicer (even though the roast was uneven). i think im liking roasting my own beans...

the best part is that i can roast and consume in small batches rather than pleading with my usual suppliers of roasted coffee to sell me less than 250g per pack (which they usually refuse).

my eyes have indeed been opened

oh if people were wondering, i went back to the shop and found out what bean this was... ethiopian sidamo (grade 2, washed). not sure what the number on the grade means...

anyways, seems like thats all the african community here in melbourne stock. i went around to lots of shops and thats pretty much all they put on the shelves.
