    Hi Guys & Girls

    I just had a go at roasting with a lid on the BM instead of using the standard lid I removed the metal liner and used it on its own ,Worked great I had the best control I have ever had over the heat and ended up with a very nice even roast about C-8..  

    With the lid on my chaff catcher worked a treat next to no mess at all I cut a small opening in front of the pickup and the air from the heat gun doses the rest.. :

    I fore got to mention what beans I roasted., Elkhill Estate Robusta Natural Pulp for blending Plus a photo of my extracting system...

      Excellent looking roast there Gra and a good idea re: the heat baffle from the lid 8-)..... Should cut down on the amount of heat required to some extent too,

          Your spot on with the heat on the gun it was lower then normal and the control was mostly by raising and lowering, The HG never once got any closer then about 60mm to the opening so I could still keep my eye on the beans ..

            Im a fan of using a lid on the corretto as well. If any corretto users havent tried it its well worth it. As Mal says, cuts down on the amount of heat needed for the gun. Best of all, excellent temp control, especially with a digital temp control heat gun like the Bosch.

              I dont use a lid as such on the corretto, tried using the BM lid but it started to melt.
              Instead i use a block of wood to cover about 60% of the overall bread pan and i have found that since doing this, all roasts are more consistently even than they were before.

                Same here Bolb, it also makes for an easy/fine heat adjustment. Love that set up Gra, true snob work there !

                  Hey Gra,

                  Im curious, do you pre-heat the BM first as you would a commercial drum roaster?

                  Also, are you using a digital HG, or just the plain old HI/LO variety?

                    I havent tried roasting with a lid yet. Recently my roasts became very uneven as though beans were getting caught in the corners of the bucket, I assumed the paddle must have worn down so I made a new paddle out of galvanised, it agitated really well but it was so good the beans all vacated the bucket......so I made an extension to the bucket out of a heavy duty aluminium foil food container, I added a few galvanised weights to keep it in place and tested it, it worked a treat all of the beans stayed in the bucket and agitated beautifully, an added bonus was that all of the chaff now vacated the bucket and adorned my work bench to be vacuumed up after roasting. I can now have the heat gun a lot further from the beans and it seems to retain the heat really well.

                      No to pre heating I start the roast at ambient temperature and yes to digital HG .

                      My lid is the the heat reflector from in side the BMs lid but dont forget to add handles for removing with out any burns
                      I find that I can control the heat more easy using this set up.

                      At the moment I am roasting with a turbo setup like K K uses finding it great with nice even roasts...

                        I did two roasts today after removing the reflective cover from the lid and using that, as you suggested Gra.

                        Definitely an improvement on heat control, though the first few moments of the first roast were a little over the shop as I tried to get a feel for it.

                        Im not sure if it was the beans I was roasting, as I hadnt roasted them before, but both times FC,RSC, SC and RSC all seemed to come at once, despite me easing off the heat right before FC. In fact, the only reason I did two roasts was the first one went waaaay too far.

                        Ill definitely be using the lid from now on. I just need to work out if the run-away-roast was due to the bean, or the lid.

                          I would think the runaway roast was from using the lid, the exact same thing happened to me the first time i started to cover the bread pan. As you said its just a matter of getting a feel for the heat required to maintain the temp rise to get the desired results.
