Hi All
Ive managed to convince Pete that he needs to make me a BBQ Spit (Coffee) Roaster. [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]
In the past, hes purpose built a baby spit roaster (see picture below) that sits on a table - just big enough for a lamb roast, a chicken, etc. Works a treat when it comes to a meal for the four of us.
Basically, hes going to build a steel perforated drum around the spit (big enough to roast about 500g of coffee at a time) that slides onto the spit rod and then a cap at the end so that I can put the beans in the drum, put the cap on, and away I go. The Roaster has a temperature gauge on it already, but I will source a DDM eventually - just waiting for Andys hard efforts to pay off in that regard so I can snap one up. Hes going to put blades (?) around the drum on the inside in a swirling motion so that it moves the beans around the drum constantly (as you can tell, Im no very technologically coherent!)
I expressed my concern that I wouldnt be able to visually see the beans and, because of the lid of the Spit, I wouldnt be able to hear the cracks, I wouldnt know when the beans were ready to come out, but he assures me that the motor for the spit is quieter than the bodgied up drill that I am using for the WPJr, so shouldnt have a problem.
Were going to have a fan off to the side so that, when the roast is done, well just open up the lid and let the fan cool the beans in the drum.
Ill keep you all updated on the progress of his efforts, together with pictures along the way of construction.
Hes got a fair idea of what hes doing so far as materials and welding goes (being an Aircraft Structural Fitter & Welder), but hes not necessarily very savvy about bean roasting - nor I, for that matter! - so I guess Im asking the question to all you knowledgeable types out there whether there is anything else that he should keep in mind when building it or does the above sound fairly well on track?
Thanks for your help in anticipation.

Cheers
Di
